Thank you so much for the review, Lark! This book is getting lots of hype, but I LOVE "The Corrections" for the very reasons you state, so maybe this isn't for me either.

You’re welcome! I’ve been disappointed so far in this year’s “big books.” It’s barely February though so I’ll press on!
Hmmm. I loved. The Corrections, but hated the characters. Every single one of them, but I lived, lived the story and writing. Now I’m curious to read this and see how the characters compare!

I love when a review unintentionally leads me to a different conclusion! I hope you love this novel! tbh I hated the character in the Corrections too especially Chip but I never doubted their humanity, however fictional. They represented something real.
Oh my god, when someone asked me about this I said, it's just trying to be Frozen and falling short. I thought more of Crossroads. I didn't know Cash had him in mind.
I gave up on this one for the reason you mention: Franzen can be mean to his characters, but they feel real to me, and I feel a connection. And when he's mean I feel for them.
After 100 pages or so everyone still felt like a caricature.
She is inventive, though, and I'll be curious to see where she goes next.
