I must re-read this, Kushagri!
My beloved just bought me this book Kushagri, and after reading your review (and Antoinette's) I just can't wait to read it. Outstanding review!!!!! 🤗🎈🦘
It's wonderful when you love a book this much. Only now you have to fill the hollow left by finishing it. Good luck with your next choice (west of Eden, maybe?)/
Thank you very much for your comment, Ken! I cherish the feelings this book evoked. Truly this book has left a hollow, and set the standard so high for the next ones! Picking up Wayward bus from the library tomorrow!
Quotes can get me too Kushargi. I have recorded pages and pages on Goodreads! . . . After reading your heartfelt review, I feel the call to read :)
Kushagri, while reading what you wrote, a single word kept echoing in my mind: timshel! The terrifying yet liberating possibility that a person can become the master of their own story, that you may choose. I felt as if I were standing there with you beneath the vast cathedral Steinbeck built out of words. Those characters slipping into our dreams and being carried with them toward that inevitable end.. And really, is a person’s legacy only a matter of blood, or is it the choices they make in that ancient struggle between good and evil? Waking up as a changed person after finishing the book, I think that might be the greatest gift Steinbeck left us.
Thank you very much, Pia for your beautiful words. The word timshel has been stuck in my mind as well. You’ve phrased these feelings beautifully. I genuinely feel that this book did change me in some way. I loved it.
I understand your feelings about this one, Kushagri--I felt much the same. I love what you said about feeling like you were there, having it happen around you. It is a most wonderful book, but you can read on, just like Steinbeck did write on, even after this best of books!
Thank you very much, Kathleen, for relating to it! Definitely! And next read happens to be Steinbeck again 😁
Having his readers make a strong connection with his characters must be a hallmark of Steinbeck's novels.
Recently I read his novels Cannery Row and it's sequel Sweet Thursday. When I finished both novels I truly missed all the characters and their hijinx.
I choose to read Cannery Row as I read it was his only novel which contained humor and I was ready for a bit of humor and he delivered it.
I highly recommend both short novels.

Thank you so much for your comment, Cheryl. What a coincidence, as I just started Cannery Row today (I had a copy) and borrowed Sweet Thursday from the library, today as well.
