If you actually walk through the Early Warning Checklist in the appendix of Authoritarian Drift in the United States, which items feel most active right now? Not in theory, but in real life. Are there specific indicators that feel more visible or harder to ignore than others?
For me, it’s #1 accountability and #6 normalization. Like when ICE shot that person in Minnesota and Trump did nothing, no real accountability, no consequences, it just… faded. I think that is exactly what #1 is pointing at.
And #6, because something like that should stop you in your tracks, but it didn’t last. it became just another story. that’s the normalization part. I think that one that bothers me the most.
