I loved the many Bolan novels I read. I must have had 20 or 30 as a kid. Like you said, thousands of dead gangstas. Finding they had stuffed his dead brother's body full of cocaine when they shipped his corpse home from Vietnam iirc sent Mack over the edge, to say the least.

They were also enjoyable, but they lacked the cohesiveness of Pendletons original stories. It's a fun collection, especially if you don't want to think hard.
