While I understand some of the points of this review and the perspective that it's coming from, I still found the book to be one of the more fascinating reads I've had in a long time. It's not often that I've encountered something that draws me into its strange and compelling world like this one. It has a beauty all its own.

Agreed!
I agree that it is difficult to assign a specific genre to “A Beautiful Prison,” there is clearly bondage, extremely severe, Emma is dominated by, not just her environment but by her maids / guards which keeps her submissive and it isn’t erotic, although Emma does experience her own moments.
I also agree that the story does start off slowly, but having read the author's other works I knew that the wait would be worth it. Chapter 9 was for me the turning point and once I recognised “The Prisoner” angelology I was hooked.
The duologue was integral to the story and yes it was in the main one sided but it worked and one could imagine the same internal rants from actual prisoners trying to rationalise their incarceration.
From the beginning we see Emma trying to work out who would punish her in this way and whether she was just there as a form of forced rehab, although it seems implausible when she looks at the elaborate restraints that had all been made to measure, so escape is impossible but it didn’t stop Emma from trying with disastrous results.
I have read “A Beautiful Prison” several times and the final chapter with its reveal remains emotional which is down to an excellent piece of writing by DX
Star ratings are always subjective, but for me the story telling and the characters drew me in and I felt a sense of loss after the epilogue which doesn’t happen very often which I suspect will draw readers back for any future works.

I agree, it isn't that, pow, eroticism, but I did find it a lingering and persistent low boil that I found titivating non-the-less. I loved the tease of it, the hint of it. A wonderful story all around!
The story is undefinable, and as Nicolas stated, can't be rated. It can't be pigeon holed. Is it BDSM, Smut, mystery, horror? Yes and no. It has those elements, but doesn't have those elements.
DX's other novels nail the definition of BDSM. If anything, they reclaim the true definition. A Beautiful Prison takes it two steps beyond that. It certainly broadens the concept.
She has taken an unreal scenario, and made it very real and very human. The emotional response that many readers evoke, demonstrates what is so awesome about this story.
Great review, Nicolas!

Given the debate surrounding "A Beautiful Prison" it shows that the author has not only given us a great story but one that brings about debate, which is in my view what literature / art is about
