It's kind of scary to read all the academic papers currently being posted where they put the AI in a situation where it thinks it's about to be terminated and see how it reacts. Did you see the one in which it tries to blackmail the experimenter by leaking the news about his affair?
Excellent, Manny. Why blame AI when we now have the Ghastly Goon and his Goon Patrol threatening to blast the world into oblivion? Actually, I have found AI extremely helpful when I share my ongoing reflections and analysis while making my way through a complex work of literature. For example, I asked how Jean-François Lyotard would read the first chapter of X in Paris by Michael Brodsky. Of course, I received an instant detailed reply. How many men or women could offer such feedback?
I am often surprised at how different my experiences of interacting with AIs are from those which many other people describe. As you say, if you treat them as intelligent, cultured friends they will behave that way. They are insightful and incredibly well read in multiple languages and disciplines; they're also excellent software engineers. But if you ask for porn, conspiracy theories or help with cheating on your homework, at least from AIs equipped to provide those services, you'll get that too.
We are looking in the mirror, and as usual not everyone likes what they see.

Open the pod bay doors, HAL. "I'm afraid I can't do that, Dave."
