Ok, added to my TBR on the basis of the hard science alone. I did not watch that show so I wonder how my experience will differ since I have no expectations.

You'll probably be alright. The biggest difference is that there's more emotions in the show. The book feels a little...dry. Even a little apathetic. Maybe something is lost in the literal translation, or maybe that's just the author's style.
