Toews has written a marvelous picaresque novel with a difference: three fully realized characters. Which, I suppose, means it’s not a picaresque novel. But that won’t matter, because Toews’ writing is so fluid, her characters are so realized, that you’ll be mesmerized. And Toews amazingly gets into the minds of two teenage siblings. As with All My Puny Sorrows, there is a suicidal character offstage who manipulates matters—but only to a certain extent. Another wondrous read from Miriam Toews. Kudos!
