The author is from my hometown. I've wanted to read this for years.

My only warning is that it is a bit cynical in nature, but there is something poetic about our very grumpy POV character.
I read this more than 40 years ago when I was going through a John Gardner phase, and I still remember the final lines. I may have to revisit it.
