A most thorough review. Professor Emeritus Fallon has a video on TED I found:http://www.ted.com/talks/jim_fallon_e...
I didn't read the book. But I did read this. http://m.theatlantic.com/health/archi...
Based on your review, I think it was enough. Thanks
I Loved the pathological narcissism! It kinda proves his point. He uses his awesomeness to discount his anatomical/genetic hypothesis, which of course, proves his hypothesis. The irony of it all is fantastic! I.E. 'I have the brain of a psycopath, but I'm just way to awesome to be a psychopath and everyone is just jealous of my success or too pedestrian to understand my humor' which makes him out to be a psychopath, and proves his initial hypothesis- Its awesome!
Obviously he sounds narcissistic - he's a self confessed pro-social psychopath! I thought it was a brilliant book :
The parts about sociopathy and brain development were great. But who cares about what kind of dancing he likes or what his favorite swimming strokes are? Blah blah blah....
I'm listening to the audiobook on my kindle. He's reading it. It is quite interesting but I find myself wanting to reach through the screen and slap him.
He has psychopathic biology and tendencies. Not narcissism. He’s very interesting. It’s not important to like him - the information is still relevant.
I agree on the irrelevance of likability. Nonetheless, while what he knows is interesting, he himself is absolutely not. It is not interesting when he met his wife or what their favorite dances were, or what kind of swimming he likes. On and on and on. Yes he is narcissistic. I mean obviously if you want to pick one diagnosis, then it would be psychopathy. But I believe believe that narcissism is on the spectrum with psychopathy. They call it a cluster, and that's fine in a lot of ways because it's less linear. I think there's clearly a relationship. I wonder if there's a single psychopath who isn't narcissistic. Though I think there are narcissists who are not psychopathic.
"Fallon discusses his own personal enjoyment of manipulating people, the way he'll wait years to get revenge if he feels slighted--but revenge in only the exact proportion to the insult he feels he received."
I know people like that, and it makes me shiver reading it.
Lool I haven’t read this book yet but I’m unfortunately noticing that a lot of big neuroscientists are like this in their writing and in real life. It so happens that they actually are very smart and do have fascinating discoveries to share with the world (unfortunately) but they’re all just a bunch of jerks who think they’re far better than the average person and they won’t even try to hide it. I mean a lot of people have huge egos but are still a little humble about it or are still tolerable and even loveable, but these neuroscientists are just a whole other breed. That said, I am an aspiring neuroscientist 🤣
Haven't read this yet, but I sussed this out from the start. Very interesting take. I appreciate you saving me the time of wading through the author's self-importance (huge lol). Still yet, I am encouraged to read on. This book was recommended as somewhat of an intro to neuroscience... and so we'll see!
Very elaborate review Claudia. Liked, "Fallon also provides good advice for dealing with psychopaths. They're 2% of the population across all ethnic groups, worldwide...
