Lesle A place to chat with your fellow NTLTRC Members, ask questions, tell stories, share recipes, share gardening tips or brag about the weather! :>)
or if your creative like Bernard you can share your original Poetry!

message 2: by Lesle (new)

Lesle I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude for all our Members, active, silent, or occassional. You keep our NTLTRC fun and enjoyable. It is a great place to come to socialize and discuss with others our reads.

Looking forward to 2022 with a new beginning and the start to our 8th year of being on Goodreads.

Happy Thanksgiving to all and hope you get to enjoy this time with special friends and loving family.

Bernard Smith OMG! It's back!!! Welcome indeed.

Yes, I have a large pile of original poems ....

message 4: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie I've just come back from a short walk and saw a dandelion blooming on someone's lawn. I think that it is the latest dandelion I've ever seen in Toronto. Roses are still blooming as well, and it's almost December.

message 5: by Lesle (new)

Lesle That's pretty amazing to see a Dandelion at this time of year!
We have had many hard frost in the last two weeks. 20's.

The beautiful sun is out and is 46 out so I have a window cracked! I miss the windows being open.

message 6: by Bernard (new)

message 14: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie Happy Thanksgiving to all who are celebrating!

message 15: by Pam (new)

Pam Happy Thanksgiving to all who are celebrating! This will be our first one without my mom (also w/o my mother-in-law) but I’m thankful that my 87 y.o. dad and brother will be joining us for our first meal together in 2 years! I’ve been surprising my dad with library books, finding ones I think he will like. I picked out a few yesterday, including a SF classic and some current non-fiction psychology books (he’s a retired psychologist). It makes me happy to find one he really likes! He’s reading The Storied Life of A. J. Fikrey right now and enjoying it.

Lesle Happy Thanksgiving Pam!

Sounds like it will be a very special day.

Thank you Rosemarie! Enjoy your day!

message 17: by Bernard (new)

Bernard Smith Happy Thanksgiving to all celebrants, may your turkeys be wholesome.

message 18: by Bernard (new)

Bernard Smith The happening today is of course Black Friday ....

Black Friday comes but once a year
So pick up your purse
And buy without fear.

.... and ....

They call it Black Friday
It's been good to me.
I got a new laptop
For a hundred pounds
And fifty pee.

message 19: by Mike (new)

Mike Fowler I have worked the e-retail side of Black Friday having had the responsability of keeping large international websites up and running through their sales. It's a day, along with Boxing Day, that I would hope not to be on-call for.

An Engineer's Lament

Black Friday rears its ugly dawn
For engineers filled with dread
As virtual servers start to spawn

By the deals shoppers are led
Crying "Gimmie stuff! Take my cash!"
Feeding corporate fat cats bread

We're good, the page is cached
But oh, the latency climbs...
The site! It is going to crash!

Curse these slow startup times
Pitchforks and torches await
Social media love our flames

The database is in a state
"Failover! FAILOVER!" he cried
The engineer hopes to make it right

The waves of clicks subside
Siren deals have lured their prey
The day is done, what a ride

Now the servers go away
Downtime cost us so many sales
Let us rest for Cyber Monday

message 20: by Bernard (new)

Bernard Smith A great lament Mike, it sounds traumatic. Now I feel like Frankenstein! In previous years my verses stood alone.

message 21: by Audrey (new)

Audrey I thought Sondheim had died a long time ago.

message 22: by Lesle (new)

Lesle Good Morning all!
Another chilly day with no sunshine as of yet. They are talking about snow later on.

Went with a really close friend yesterday and purchased grave blanket for her and my family and took them around the cemeteries.
A very cold day but it was nice to see them out replacing the Flags and putting out Veterans ribbons.

Boys stayed all night. Brayden was up til 2:30am crazy child he loves staying up and sleeping half the day away!

Hope everyone has a happy Saturday and can take time for some reading!

message 23: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie The CBC news app had an article about Sondheim, with some photos of him over the years, for those who are interested. The app is free.

message 24: by Pam (new)

Pam We are still having nice weather (low 60s F for the highs) so I’ll probably go for a walk along the Rio Grande Bosque this afternoon while visiting my dad. That, plus lunch with my daughter, and going out to listen to music tonight makes for a full day! Squeeze in a little reading, of course, and a trip to the library! Hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend!

message 25: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie Sounds like you have a lovely day planned, Pam. It's a lot colder here.
Tomorrow we are going to my aunt's 90th birthday party, catered in a restaurant following all the covid rules.
Then we're all going to her and my cousin's house for homemade Kuchen(yummy German baked goodies). I haven't seen any of them for a while since before Covid, so it will be a good time for everyone.
They live in Kitchener, Ontario which is about an hour and a half drive from Toronto. I'm glad it's on a Sunday, because traffic is a lot lighter.

message 26: by Mike (new)

Mike Fowler Please say hi to my old friends and cousins Rosemarie, Kitchener is where I grew up!

message 27: by Mike (new)

Mike Fowler I like the sound of being in the Algonquin Round Table! I haven't found a good poetry group on here, just one you must request to join and can't preview.

message 28: by Rosemarie (last edited Nov 27, 2021 09:09AM) (new)

Rosemarie Cool, Mike. I went to university there for two years back in the 70s. My relatives have been there since the 60s.
In what part of Kitchener did you live?

message 29: by Mike (new)

Mike Fowler It was Forest Heights. Dad was a professor at the University of Waterloo throughout the 80s upto the mid 90s. I still miss Oktoberfest!

message 30: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie If only!

My 10 year old grandson is learning how to play the guitar, from his dad. My daughter got a new bass and he's playing that too.

That's cool, Mike. I remember Oktoberfest!

message 31: by Bernard (new)

Bernard Smith In Praise of Kit-Kats

Eat a Kit-Kat every day,
And you'll be happy,
Bright and gay.
Lick the chocolate,
Smooth and sweet,
And finish up
The wholesome treat.

message 32: by Lesle (new)

Lesle Happy Sunday!
Rosemarie I hope you have a lovely day it sounds like it will be a nice time. German treats! Sounds delightful.

Today we will be spending time visiting family at the cemeteries. It is always nice to get together and decorate. Christmas was my Mom's favorite Holiday so we like to spread the love!

I am hoping to find some surprises on my own shelves today to get ready for December. Love Christmas cheerful stories.

Hope everyone has a beautiful day with family today!

message 33: by Lesle (new)

Lesle May this festival bring blessings upon you and your family.
Happy Hanukkah!

message 34: by Lesle (new)

Lesle I hope all Members that enjoy the Festival of Lights have a Happy Hanukkah!

message 35: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie I had a good time yesterday and ate way too much cake! It was all so good!

message 36: by Lesle (new)

Lesle Cake is good! Not sure you can have too much when it is during a family get together. All rules are out the door during those :))

message 37: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie Exactly! And everybody there got a goodie package to take home as well.

message 38: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie I really like potato latkes too!

message 39: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie When we were in Kitchener on Sunday, we ate dinner in downtown Waterloo, which is its twin city, and has a much livelier downtown since the universities are there. We were just getting out of the car when we saw heard a loud bang and saw some fireworks. It turns out they marked the beginning of Hanukkah. There is a large outdooor menorah in the square there.
I learned this today from reading the CBC app, and looking at photos that were posted there. Everything was covered with newly fallen snow and looked very pretty with all the lights and Christmas decorations.
Of course, the snow in Toronto is already melting and slushy, but I'm sure we'll get more.

message 40: by Lesle (new)

Lesle That sounds like a beautiful scene Rosemarie! New snow just makes everything pristine.

message 41: by Mike (new)

Mike Fowler All this talk of food has reminded me of a Jewish Deli my friend's family took me to occasionally in Waterloo. Time to raid the cupboards...

message 42: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie I was setting up the new threads and goodreads would not let me open all of them. The YA threads will be opened as soon as they let me!

message 43: by Bernard (new)

I like Kit Kats, too but I have a new fave – Pick Up! bars. they are German (made by Bahlsen) but you can get them in Tesco, assuming you are in the UK. Yum yum.

message 45: by Lesle (new)

Lesle Rosemarie wrote: "I was setting up the new threads and goodreads would not let me open all of them. The YA threads will be opened as soon as they let me!"

It will not let me open anymore either. Try again this evening.

message 46: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie Good idea, Lesle.

message 47: by Bernard (new)

Bernard Smith Thanks Gary, I will look out for the Pick Up bars. I have had Bahlsen biscuits, like the Tet ones (named after the Vietnamese word for spring???).

message 48: by Gary (new)

Gary Bernard wrote: "Thanks Gary, I will look out for the Pick Up bars. I have had Bahlsen biscuits, like the Tet ones (named after the Vietnamese word for spring???)."

I believe that is correct but I have no idea if the biscuits are named after it – I don't think I have had them. :-)

message 49: by Bernard (new)

Bernard Smith It's not Vietnamese, it's Egyptian!

"New dust and moisture-resistant TET packaging is introduced. The TET sign, featuring an oval with a snake and three dots deriving from an ancient Egypt hieroglyphic meaning ‘everlasting’, was originally pronounced as “dschet”, but simplified to “TET”. "

Wow – well researched, Bernard.
