Can I read these books in any order?
I read this one first, then went back to the beginning and did them in order. That worked. They are amazingly bad, but kind of fun if you're in the right frame of mind. Being eight definitely helps.
Heh, I've never really heard of this series until yesterday. I'll try and practice being 8 again somehow.
I read the Lensmen series in my early teens. They are so memorable, I have absolutely no recollection what happens in all 11/12 books. I think I need Wiki to help me out here :_D

The Arisians (thinly disguised form of "Aryans") enlist the human race's help in their fight against the Eddorian Untermenschen, and (view spoiler).
If history is true to form, the Lensmen humans would become complacent capitalist pigs & screw up everyone else in their greed.
It's also possible that the Arisians eliminated their now irrelevant allies in order to remove a potentially dangerous rival for Galactic supremacy. Someone needs to write a sequel!
I remember reading Doc Smith Book several millennia ago. Brilliant intro to sic-fi, but not sure that I would like them now.
If I do, I would change my name, by deed poll to Brian Herbert. Would you be prepared to do the same & change yours to Kevin Anderson??
I understand that is the only way for folks to resurrect old space operas that need to be left alone as they are.
Very funny - check out my review of "The Imperial Stars" if you have a moment. I wrote something very similar. A young (mental) age is indeed appropriate when trying to appreciate the Doc's books... :-)
I, too, discovered Doc Smith when I was about 8, in the original Astoundings that belonged to my uncle who was killed in WWII and which my grandparents had kept. It was those that got me interested in reading, and not the insipid drek I was fed at school. And Jack Williamson’s The Legion of Time! Ecstasy!
So I couldn’t agree with you more.
BTW, the original stories were by far the best, before Smith retconned them to fit Triplanetary into the series.
And anyone interested can now download the magazines in PDF. See my own review of Galactic Patrol for the details.
I can just imagine you at 8 with a bit of peach fuzz on your chin just starting to sprout!
I've never heard of Doc Smith. The only E.E. I know is Cummings (and he is lowercase)!
I asked the newly released ChatGPT-5.4 to envisage a collaboration between them, but even this state-of-the-art AI thought it was a tough assignment.
