Lesle NTLTRC Chat Group: One on One

I have opened a Secret Group this if for those that do not want to go outside of the Goodreads Community to chat.

This will be a one on one place to talk to me about anything really that you do not wish to voice in the group.

It will be just a personal conversation of your thoughts, ideas, planning or concerns.

Rules:
1) This is a Secret group no one outside of our group will even know it is there
2) It is only by invitation from me: Your Profile cannot be set to "Private" during invitation time. Change back as soon as you accept the invitation.
3) Per your request I can add any of the Mods or Members you wish to have join in on the discussion
4) I will remove each member after the chatting is completed
This will also allow you to be reinvited at a later time
5) I will delete the thread before inviting another Member
6) If you would like to have a discussion please state "Chat Please" in the comments and as soon as I receive the message I will send an invite
Just remember we maybe on different timeframes like England is about five (5) hours ahead of me and I do not stay on here 24/7
7) (I hate to even state this) Please know I can take criticism or dislike of me just prefer us to be adults and respectful.
If you use foul language you will be removed from both groups

I am really hoping this is a good solution for the lack of Direct Messaging.

Thank you for your patience as I work the kinks out.

Greg Oh my goodness Lesle, you got a lot of takers already!

I just wanted to say that the private chat group is a brilliant, clever solution, and I am going to use something like this in the groups I moderate as well. Thank you so much!

Lesle With the newest spam I have decided to make this an open communication spot for comments or questions that you feel can be made publicly.

See the Fundamentals for the latest:

Luís Chat please

message 19: by Lesle (last edited Feb 03, 2026 06:30AM) (new)

Lesle Unfortunately the deleting of our Direct Message "Reply" and "Message" buttons is a social aspect that will be missed.

I know this has been very irritating for me and I am sure you as well. You can always request a chat.

By Request a Chat I can invite the other Member to join that you would like to exchange emails with once you are in the group.

Once completed and received on both parts. Please delete the comments and let me know your finished here. I will remove you both from the chat. I do not want to see the exchange.

Goodreads does not have their own Data Center/Technicians any longer since Amazon took over. They do not have specialist taking care of Goodreads issues in the Tech field.

The scammers and spam was out of control for them and the only option they have is flipping a switch to off.

The rarely reverse their decisions.

Unfortunately I can not invite you in. Your profile cannot be set to "Private"

You can change it for now. Once invitation is excepted you can switch it back.

I apologize.

Spartacus7 There is no good solution here, but admire the strategy and dedication. Thank you, Lesle.

The big (public) question for me (and this may have been answered any number of times): What is the rationale for preventing reader-to-reader communication? Does anyone know?

message 23: by Lesle (last edited Feb 04, 2026 02:36PM) (new)

Lesle Good Morning Spartacus7

Amazon has a around 250 Data Techs. Their priority of course is Amazon.
From what I understood the Spamming got out of hand and no one solely dedicated to resolving the issue. The easiest fix was to flip a switch.
They were suppose to leave the messaging to Authors but that didnt happen. Thinking they cannot separate friends to friends either.
The also have limited the amount of comments you can do at a time (10). Without closing out and getting back in and hour or so later you can start your next 10.

My opinion is: Amazon wants the books sells that is generated from Goodreads but could care less about the social aspect of it.

Hope that answered your question.

🙃

message 28: by Lesle (new)

Lesle I have updated msg one with an additional way that we all can communicate.
It has been offered as another way to chat between Members or chat with Authors and Moderators.

Spartacus7 Howdy folks - and probably Lesle in particular: Since I don't know where else to post this, thought I'd try here.

I'm reading Endurance, by Alfred Lansing...a non-fiction classic of Ernest Shackleton and his crew's voyage to the Antarctic. The edition I have is this one:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6...

On the cover is a photo of Shackleton. So far, so good.

Then you go down the page to "About the author Alfred Lansing"...and the photo isn't of Lansing, it's the Shackleton photo.

Lansing, not nearly so ruggedly handsome, would probably be flattered by the error, though it's a bit hard to tell since he's been dead for 50 years.

Still, it might be worth correcting the photo.

Lindenblatt Spartacus7 wrote: "Howdy folks - and probably Lesle in particular: Since I don't know where else to post this, thought I'd try here..."

Spartacus7, this is a request for the Goodreads Librarians Group, not group moderators. You can post such requests here: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

For this request, I have deleted the photo of Shackleton in Lansing's profile: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

Good catch, I hadn't even noticed it, when I read the book last year. It's an awe-inspiring read! If you like this kind of books, I can also recommend The Worst Journey in the World by Apsley Cherry-Garrard, if you haven't read it yet.

message 31: by Spartacus7 (new)

Spartacus7 Thanks LB. Is it taken care of now because of what you've done, or should I still post to the Librarians and explain further?

Oh - yes - I see what you're recommending. Thank you very much. This kind of stuff often close to an Aussie's heart because of A. being part of the Commonwealth and B. the expeditions of Douglas Mawson.

Don't know if you've tried these: Different continents, different conditions, all very desperate stuff, and very well written...

Brazilian Adventure Peter Fleming

Sufferings in Africa: Captain Riley's Narrative; an Authentic Narrative of the Loss of the American Brig Commerce, Wrecked on the Western Coast of Africa, in the Month of August, 1815... James Riley

In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex Nathaniel Philbrick

It's taken care of, no need to post a separate request to the Librarians.

Thanks for the great recommendations! I have 'In the Heart of the Sea' on my list for later this year.

message 33: by Lesle (new)

Lesle Spartacus7 Thank you for the recommendation.

Appreciate the help Lindenblatt!!

message 34: by Spartacus7 (new)

Spartacus7 Thanks for taking care of that Lindenblatt.

Great recommendations are only as great as you felt the book was worth reading when you got to it. Often-times they fall flat - but I remain hopeful, for your sake.

C. Borden Hello, I’m new to the group. I received an email supposedly from someone in this group saying I’ve had a book nominated for this groups “cosmic theology and scientific paradox” category. Of course, the email states an administrative fee… Anyway, I wanted to let you know someone is using this group to reach out to authors.

message 39: by Lesle (new)

Lesle It's a scam!!!
Please do not click on it.

Please send it to Goodreads Support at
https://www.goodreads.com/about/conta...

I am so sorry C.
It has been crazy with these attempts.
Please be careful. Especially if they are asking for fees or more funds of any kind.

No one on Goodreads is going to ask you for money.

message 40: by C. (new)

C. Borden I was certain it was. Thank you for the link to support. These scams are far too numerous.

Unfortunately it sounds like it picked up after removing the Direct Messaging. They just found another way to work their scams.
