Nick I suppose that this idea of white southern women not directly involved stems from both The United Daughters of the Confederacy work to promote their warped memory of the confederacy as well as general 19th century and early 20th century norms and ideals on the economic agency of women.

Richard It has been 4+ years since I read the book but as I recall Jones does not offer reasons for why/how white women slaveowners were generally portrayed this way. But your ideas seem spot on. If you read the book, I would be interested in your thoughts about it.

Jones, by the way, is a great teacher, In auditing two of her courses at University of California, Berkeley I found that she was extremely knowledgeable, well organized, and personable. Even with 100+ students in her class she still took questions. She is understandably very highly rated by her students!

Good reading to you!
