CBRetriever Dan Simmons, the author of more than 30 novels and short story collections spanning horror, political thrillers and science fiction such as Hyperion and The Terror, has died at age 77.

Simmons died in Longmont, Colorado on 21 February, with his wife and daughter at his side, his obituary announced.

The author was best known for Hyperion, his 1989 science fiction novel that won the prestigious Hugo award for best novel and a Locus award; Simmons later wrote three sequels.

Over his career he also won two World Fantasy awards, a dozen Locus awards, the Shirley Jackson award, and several Bram Stoker awards, while his 2007 novel The Terror, a fictionalised imagining of what happened on the doomed Franklin expedition, was adapted into an acclaimed television series in 2018.

Hyperion is a masterpiece. Beautiful, hideous, ancient, and terrifying. RIP Martin Silenus!

Was the name of the series also The Terror?

I was sad to learn that he had died last week. I looooooved Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion. I keep meaning to read the next two in the series. I have them on audio, I just keep waiting for the right moment.

CBRetriever The Terror was excellent too

message 5: by Alondra (new)

Alondra Miller I've only read Carrion Comfort and The Terror, but they both were enough to make me a fan.

2026 needs to leave our authors alone. *sigh*

Phil He will be missed. I have read just about all of his novels, and several more than once...

Lars Dradrach Simmons was truly one of the greats, apart from the outstanding masterpiece Hyperion/Endymion he also wrote such versatile novels as Carrion Comfort and Illium, both amazing stories. I’m looking forward to reading The Terror which is highly praised, in his honour later this spring.

P.E.N. Bortolotti Sad to hear this. Hyperion remains one of the most haunting and philosophically rich books I’ve read, that mix of mythology, faith, apocalypse, and existential dread is unmatched. The Terror’s survival horror also left a strong impression. A true loss for speculative fiction. RIP Dan Simmons.
