Reading Time (November 1, 2009) LANE, Tim (text) Janet Ware (illus.) Flight on Fire Mountain (A Novel) iUniverse, 2006 86pp $US8.95 pbk ISBN 9780595382125
This is a novel about paragliding, written by a paraglider who introduces in great detail many of the skills and experiences there are in this unusual occupation. Josh is a sixteen-year-old paraglider and, before the events of this incredible day he had been going through a period of change and adjustment. His parents had been divorced and the new relationships with a step-family were causing him struggles and conflicts of loyalty.
On this particular day he is on his way flying to deliver a paraglider to his father. Getting through a fearsome forest fire, finding a little girl lost in the fire-stricken forest and bringing her and the paraglider eventually to safety, all this called for all the skills of navigation and decision-making he could muster. Once involved in Josh's hideous situation the reader will be almost completely unable to stop reading. We absolutely must know if and how Josh survives. While to begin with the story, with all its paragliding technicalities may seem more suited to male readers, every reader, both boys and girls, plus adults, must find reading it an enthralling experience. Written in fairly mature but straight-forward language it is a most absorbing story for adolescent readers.

“Flight on Fire Mountain” is an intriguing coming of age story about a teenaged boy who grows up in the hours that he must survive a forest fire. It’s a gripping book that reads just like watching an action movie. Josh Randal is the child of a broken family. His parents are divorced, and “paragliding was just about the only thing he and his dad did together anymore.”
As I read about Josh, I realized that author Tim Lane has a true understanding of familial relationships. He gets what it’s like to be a teenager, to have so many things you want to do while parents won’t let you have the freedom to do them. He even understands how difficult it can be to be taught a skill by a parent! Josh wants to spend time with his father, win his father’s approval, and be independent from him all at the same time.
While Josh’s story of surviving a forest fire by paragliding over it is the main one, Lane masterfully interweaves the stories of the child Theresa, the reporter Stephanie, and the five campers. While each story effects the main storyline, they also serve to contrast between childhood and adulthood, and they particularly show how Josh grows into an effective adult free from the childish whims that often infect the lives and decisions of adults. Not only does Josh survive the forest fire and grow into a man that day, but he also learns to be confident with himself, a lesson many adults have yet to learn.
Kirkus Reviews
A young paraglider finds his inner strength high above a blazing inferno.
Licensed-paragliding pilot Lane puts his firsthand knowledge of the aerial sport to good use in this brief but thrilling adventure novel for young adults. The book centers on 17-year-old Josh, a shy student struggling with burgeoning adulthood. He competes with a new stepmother, a wicked stepbrother and a spirited stepsister for the affections of his well-meaning father, Peter, who mentors his son in his paragliding hobby. Peter also firmly scolds Josh for neglecting vital equipment, like his helmet and the strap for his indispensable glasses, a hint of challenges to come. A couple of botched routine flights put Josh on edge, testing his mettle and bracing him for what comes next. Peter asks him to bring an errant glider back to an instructor’s house in the San Bernardino Mountains when a forest fire engulfs the location. Josh is close to panic when he remembers his father’s advice: “Work the problem. Don’t let the problem work you.” In a literal leap of faith, Josh takes to the air, negotiating smoky skies and violent updrafts in a series of precarious takeoffs and landings. His parents’ simultaneous rescue efforts are superfluous, but the flight sequences above the raging forest fire are both plausible and bracing. Josh even gets to play hero, saving a distressed 8-year-old camper by taking her on a risky tandem flight. In the end, he delivers her safely, despite the loss of his helmet, glasses and even the glider itself, sunk in a shallow lake. The story is squarely aimed at adolescents, the writing undemanding and straightforward, but Lane delivers an earnest drama worthy of an after-school special.
A rousing, unusual story about a boy who takes to the air but lands squarely on his own two feet
I am the author of "Thanksgiving: The Pilgrims' First Year in America" (and some 20 other books, half for YAs). I would like to introduce "Thanksgiving" to this group because it is a rare case of a book written primarily for adults but quite accessible to YAs. Though many of the concepts are of adult level, most of the book is simple and graphic enough for teens. The Flesch-Kincaid reading level is 8th grade. I know two 11-year-olds who read it and liked it. One 9-year-old told me she'd read the first few chapters of her mother's copy and was going to read more. So this is a book that actually makes history interesting. It makes it real. And since the Pilgrims have dropped the American curriculum after the 4th grade, I think it would be good if YAs read the book and saw that the Pilgrims weren't just a bunch of cartoon characters dressed like Puritans and standing beside jolly Indians and sweating turkeys.
I think the Goodreads reviews demonstrate how interesting the book is. I've set up a website where Goodreads readers can get the book for half price: www.NLLibrarium.com/goodreads/pilgrims . You can read a long excerpt at that site.
It would be fascinating to see a discussion about how effectively an adult history can appeal to young readers -- how effectively and why.
I know what you're thinking: This might be a good book for November. But you know what? This isn't a holiday topic. it's about the American culture and where it comes from. It's appropriate -- and even essential -- all the time.

It is the story of a teen girl named Cassie, who is keeping a huge secret. She can read minds. For most people this might be a really cool ability, but for Cassie it's a nightmare, especially in new places where everyone's mind seems to talk to her at once. When she meets Will, she thinks he's just a guy who wants to hook up, but then she realizes he has a sensitive side. He's an incredible artist, and he seems to want to help her, but can she trust him. Can she trust anyone?
The sequel to this psychic teen love story is coming out this summer, too.

Hi All,My new book "Sophomore Campaign" was just released. It is the sequel to "The Legend of Mickey Tussler." I was honored to have "Tussler" made into a TV movie called " A Mile in His Shoes" starring Dean Cain and Luke Schroder. The movie aired in September!
My series is about a young autistic pitching phenom who makes it on a minor league baseball team in the 1940s. This series (two books so far) is perfect for a young adult audience. I am also a teacher - I have taught high school English and creative writing for over 20 years at the same high school. So I can relate to the postings in this group as both an author of YA lit and a teacher.
Please check out the info for my books on Goodreads, participate in my author Q & A, or enter to win my book on the giveaway. You can also visit me at www.franknappi.com for more information. If you want to talk further about using my book in your class or school please contact me as well! I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi all; Thanks for providing this venue! I have also posted comments on the thread regarding YA novels for reluctant readers, as my two books are just that: novels with high interest and topical themes but written at a lower reading level. Published by Orca Books, 'Benched' and 'Living Rough' are short, quick reads for the average student but will also engage those students who are reluctant to pick up books or who struggle with reading.
Teens have given me positive feedback about 'Benched' and both a parent and teacher commented that this was the first novel their child and student ever finished. 'Living Rough' has received excellent reviews from CM magazine, Keen Readers, and was awarded 'The Year's Best' for 2011 from Resource Links.
I have information posted on Goodreads and have a blog/homepage at: http://cristywatson.blog.com/ I'd be happy to communicate with you/your class and Orca has lesson plans to accompany my books:

Hello all,This looks like an interesting group, but do I have to raise my hand to ask a question? :-)
I've written three YA books, all with different flavours and textures. I try and make my books a different journey every time.
Over the Mountain
Jenna Adams leads a quiet life...until Scott Thomas turns up...
Taken
Amon Russo has it all on a beautiful Greek island...only he isn't who he thinks he is...
American Girl
Japanese-American internment in World War Two through the eyes of Mary Tanaka and her family...
I'm currently just about to start editing my fourth, Eight Mile Island, which should be coming out later this year.
Thanks for the opportunity to post!
Hope's Daughter is a lightly dystopian/sci-fi YA novel, released in late 2011. It is currently ebook only, but available for all tablets and e-readers. Reviews from older YA readers as well as aged 12+ readers have been positive so far; it was recently featured for a school class project (school in England) comparing dystopian visions of the future.
Book Synopsis:
Life should be simple for Cassie.
For the small population of Earth survivors who live on the Space Station Hope everything they do is planned and scheduled, down to the cyclical food menus, their roles in the station, even how many children they have.
Despite rigid controls directing her life, Cassie feels more out of synch than ever and worries she won’t find a place for herself within the station community. Perhaps that’s because she’s hearing things inside her head that can’t possibly be real. Or maybe it’s the regular elopements of her peers, heading off to a romantic future in the Married Quarter of the space station, whilst she’s never even been attracted to a boy – no matter how hard her best friend Ami pushes them at her. Then there are the odd questions her work placement partner Balik keeps raising. His questions are just as troubling for her as his distracting smiles and eyes that seem to see inside her.
As Cassie draws closer to Balik she finds that everything else in her life begins to shift. He tells her things that call into question the system they live within. She can't believe he is right, but at the same time she finds it hard to deny the sincerity of his ideas. Could there be a connection between Cassie’s problems and Balik’s questions? The truth will drag them both to a terrifying and deadly conclusion beyond anything they could have imagined.

Hi everyoneSlowly getting to grips with the Goodreads website and it's various groups. The book I'd like to promote is my first, called 'The Firestone Crystal.' Details as below:
Agathea Fulstropp is looking forward to a luxury break in the Caribbean with her parents, but is livid when they announce that the trip has to be cancelled due to work commitments! So instead of spending six weeks sunning herself on a tropical beach, Thea – as she insists on being called – finds herself unceremoniously packed up, and sent off to stay with a grandfather she barely knows for the entire summer! But it turns out to be the best summer of her life when her grandfather has a strange reunion with a mysterious childhood friend, and she is given the opportunity of a lifetime.
To visit a world beyond the stars, and become Earth’s first student to be enrolled in an experimental Inter-Planetary Education Programme at the Firestone Academy, where lessons in telepathy, mind-reading and astral projection are the norm.
Things, however, are not as straightforward as they seem. One of her fellow students makes no secret of the fact that he despises her, and will stop at nothing to make her leave…she is having increasingly disturbing, vivid dreams…and just who is that hideously deformed cave creature, and more to the point, what does it want with her?
Have had some great feedback, but am awaiting some views from children, so if you have any of your own, or nieces and nephews I'd love to know what they think.

Hi There,
My name is Cindy Callaghan and I am happy to tell you about JUST ADD MAGIC and a some things I offer to schools and libraries.
When Kelly Quinn and her two BFFs discover a dusty old cookbook while cleaning out her attic, the girls decide to try a few of the mysterious recipes inside. But the ancient book bears an eerie warning, and it doesn’t take long for the girls to realize that their dishes are linked to strange occurrences. The Keep ‘Em Quiet Cobbler actually silences Kelly’s pesky little brother and the Hexberry Tarta brings an annoying curse to mean girl Charlotte Barney. And there’s the Love Bug Juice, which seems to have quite the effect on those cute Rusamano boys…
Could these recipes really be magical? Who wrote them and where did they come from. And most importantly, what kind of trouble are the girls stirring up for themselves? Things are about to get just a little too hot in Kelly Quinn's kitchen.
Just Add Magic
I LOVE going to school for assemblies about writing and leading writing workshops for schools. If you are too far, I can Skype in! Students often contact me for book reports or interviews...this is great fun and I encourage it!
I also visit many bookclubs either in person or via Skype.
I look forward to working with teachers and librarians.

Hi Me = new group member, first-time YA novelist.
I've written Runaway! It's about a literate slave boy fleeing for freedom on the Underground Railroad.
Historic fiction... set in Bleeding Kansas, 1856. Real people, places and events depicted. I think it ought to be good supplemental reading in American History or American Government.
www.maleybooks.com has a sample chapter, and http://www.amazon.com/Runaway-Dennis-... has a cool "look inside" feature. Paperback and Kindle.
Looking forward to discussions in this group. Thanks!
I am a fifth grade teacher in North Carolina whose work has been routinely praised by Piers Anthony. I have written many middle grade fantasy books, but I wanted to tell you about my latest, a YA Horror series called TURNCOATS. It's a zombie book with heart. Here's a summary:
For high-schooler Nathan Bristol, finding out his sister's best friend, Trina Bivens, has come back as a zombie is the least of his problems. While she may not have a hankering for his flesh, her visions predict the world will soon be overrun by zombies who do. Further, she reveals Nathan will play a huge part in saving the world. The boy can't even make it through third period Chemistry without making a mess of things, much less stop a zombie apocalypse. What follows is a harrowing race to rescue his mother, deliver his family from teeth-chomping danger and maybe, just maybe, save the world. BOOK ONE: OVERRUN deals with Trina and Nathan's tenuous relationship with each other and the rest of the world. Branded as turncoats by zombies and humans alike, the two must forge a bond that will help them save Nathan's family and put them on the road together to save the world from the evil entity that has released the undead.
Due to this being a Young Adult Horror series, it's suitable for ages 13 and up. It contains violence and loads of zombie mayhem. Trust me, it might leave the youngsters feeling a bit queasy and unsettled at bedtime.
Hello everyone,My name is B.B. Shepherd and my contemporary YA series is called The Glister Journals and the first book
Bronze is released with the second on the way.
Allison Anderson is smart, creative, has a great sense of humor and is starting her first year of high school in a new town. And she is autistic. In spite of a bullied past, she prevails over anxiety and discovers an exciting new life through a group of unlikely friends and a new interest in horses and all things equine.
The first novel is probably suitable for older middle grade readers, but because of future topics and situations in the series (and a little mild swearing) we recommend it for high school age. It's a long but easy read, and there are 'vocabulary' and 'questions for discussion' sections at the back as class resources.
Assumptions of all kinds play a major role both for characters and readers alike. Major themes are friendship and relationships, but horses, extreme sports, and high school in general also are important.
Reviews can be read here and the first chapters can be read here (Amazon's Look Inside-please be aware it messes up formatting!). There is a new edition of this book coming out, as well as the second book in the series.
I'd love to respond to any questions or comments anybody has, especially from teachers and librarians, and look forward to making new friends through the discussions.

Hi!I'm a former teacher who loves to read and write. Most of my books and stories (published in many magazines) are for ages 9 to 12, but my latest novel, WAITING TO FORGET, is for ages 10 to 15. Here's my "elevator blurb:"
WAITING TO FORGET begins and ends in a hospital, and in between, twelve-year-old T.J. struggles with memories of his difficult other life, before he was adopted, and with the reasons why his little sister now lies unconscious in the emergency room.

I thought my YA novel would be of particular interest to this group because many reviewers have said that it should be mandatory reading in schools, because of its solutions for bullying theme. I wrote it to share the methods I've used with teens to help them handle their emotions and difficult situations, but it's all written into a novel.

Hi all,I am writing a YA book series which I will introduce some day. It is a historical suspense and will probably fit best in the New Adult category.
For now, though, I wanted to let you know about my multi-author blog, English Historical Fiction Authors. While the majority of author-members are not YA, the daily posts about various British historical topics would fascinate those of your students (and those of you) who are interested in English/British history. There is great variety, and many people come back with their morning coffee each day to read the latest.

Hi everyone,My name is Steve Berkowitz and I am the author of Chocrotes and the World Without Question. This short story was originally written for my educational grad class: Arts and Education: History and Philosophy.
This allegorical tale explores the power of questions, and references ideas around tyranny, revolutionary movements, freedom of speech, and educational philosophy.
Chocrotes and the World Without Question is a fable meant for readers, ages 9 and up. Children of all ages though, including adults, will enjoy Chocrotes’ struggle to fight for the right to question.
In a world of chickens, one chicken fights for the right to question.
The setting for this book is a fantasy world inhabited strictly by Chickens. In this far off world, the Chickens live in fear of an evil King: Doodle Doo. This evil king, having usurped the throne from a Queen and King who believed in the power of questions and love, Doodle Doo turns the Chicken world upside down and destroys thousands of lives in the process.
Chocrotes is born during Doodle Doo's reign and is raised by a scientist and professor of roostory, who believe in the power of questioning. Chocrotes believes strongly that his peaceful world has been uprooted by a fascist regime. Throughout his life Chocrotes asks questions, even though he is warned not to.
This is his story.
You can read a preview of Chocrotes at Libboo.com, a great place to discover new upcoming books and authors. https://www.libboo.com/read/chocrotes...
If you would like a review copy of the ebook please let me know and I will send it right over.
Have a great day or night,
Steve
My YA novel, The Journey of Hannah Woods, has gone live. Fourteen-year-old Hannah Woods suffers from panic attacks. Overmedicated by a family that has a secret, she lives in a world full of anxiety and fear. Author, Helene Forst, tells about Hannah’s journey from the depths of Black Hollow’s darkness, the wealthy old-money town where she grew up, to the light of Crystal Cove and the world of her hippie grandparents. “The Journey of Hannah Woods” begins when Hannah—who is haunted by the neglect of an alcoholic father and the abuse of a mentally ill caretaker—is plunged into a nightmare that threatens her very existence. After her father drowns, Hannah’s world spirals out of control as she is forced to move to the other side of the island where her newly discovered hippie grandparents live.
Suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Hannah is addicted to prescription drugs—drugs given to her for anxiety and depression; drugs given to her to keep her silent. The moment she enters the world of Crystal Cove marks the beginning of her heroic journey as she struggles to navigate the emotional world of adolescence and addiction. With the help of her Grandma Pearl and her Grandpa Hollis, the talents of a remarkable therapist, Dr. Katherine Hope, and a new best friend, Emma Matthews, Hannah discovers her amazing self.
Though fictional, “The Journey of Hannah Woods” is an inspiring tale filled with profound insights and essential life lessons. The evolution of Hannah’s character will empower both teens and adults who find themselves addicted to drugs or who have experienced the devastating effects of physical, emotional, and/or psychological abuse and neglect.

'The Cursed Nile’ is an epic battle where the past has the power to change the future, and the future has the power to change the past. Which one will triumph?
Hello,I am Bernice L. Rocque, a newish Goodreads member and author of UNTIL THE ROBIN WALKS ON SNOW. The book is based on the birth of my uncle in 1922 weighing 1.5 pounds and the efforts of my immigrant family and the midwife to save him. I wrote it for 60-90 something adults, but friends who are/were teachers and librarians are saying it may be appropriate for grade 5 up. I would welcome feedback on this. Thanks. BLR
Hi all, I'm from England and have penned three novels specifically aimed at young adults, but being enjoyed by readers of all ages. They are easy reading and good fun. Here's a recent blog post by an author on here;
The Jake West Trilogy is an epic fantasy adventure series which will have you laughing, crying and begging for more. Compared by some readers to the great author C S Lewis, M J Webb’s novels have been described as a cross between Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. The story tells of two ordinary boys who unlock by accident a deadly secret which threatens to destroy us all. Hunted across worlds the teenagers escape to a fantasy land. There, our intrepid heroes will have to rely on each other and the alliances they make in order to survive against the overwhelming forces of evil who now seek their destruction. The exciting novels contain heroes in abundance, battles, wizards, dragons, spirits, warriors and beasts, the undead, prophecies... and just plain human guts and determination. There are strong themes of loyalty and friendship. These are books all parents will want their children to read and be inspired by.
‘The Estian Alliance is the spectacular conclusion to the Jake West trilogy which will take you on the ride of your life. This story is full of action, adventure and twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat,’ said one reviewer. ‘A pleasure to read aloud to my sons, we were engrossed in the action from start to finish. The characters are extremely well written, and you WILL form an emotional attachment to them. They're so well crafted, they remain in your thoughts for a long time,’ said another.
Thanks

Hi,I'm Wanda Snow Porter.
My YA historical novel, Spurs for José, follows the adventures of a young Indian vaquero, José Rodriquez, as the Mexican-American War erupts, gold is discovered at Sutter’s Mill, and California becomes the thirty-first state of the United States. Based on true events, the book fulfills the California Content Standard for History-Social Science and provides supplemental reading for fourth, fifth and eighth grades.
My latest YA novel, Remedy, deals with family problems.
Everything in thirteen-year-old Tim McGrew’s life stinks. It was bad enough his dad left, but even worse, he must move to his grandparent’s remote ranch on Nowhere Mountain, leave his friends and school behind, and give up playing baseball. He loves his wacky grandma and enjoyed summer visits at the ranch backpacking and horseback riding with his grandpa. But now Grandpa is dead. And Tim and his dog, Tiny, are the only males in a house full of women. To top off his problems, Grandma adopts a wild burro from the Bureau of Land Management and expects him to train it. Tim hopes it’s true that Grandpa’s ghostly vibes still linger around the ranch because he needs help taming the long-eared donkey with a noisy bray, and even more important, needs advice on how to get his parents back together.

Wanda's books are great for stories. I've read both of them and highly recommend them. They'd be great for classroom discussions, especially history classes. The characters are nicely developed and show that young teens have some of the same problems, whether they're modern day teens or historical teens.

The Moon Coin / Book One / A Moon Realm Novel
Tales, unlike stories, never lie. You see, a tale is an account of things in their due order, often divulged secretly, or as gossip. Would you like to hear one? —Lord Autumn
Uncle Ebb was so good at telling his tales of the Moon Realm that sometimes it sounded like he’d been there himself.
As children, Lily and Jasper listened raptly to his bedtime tales of a place where nine moons swirled around one another, each inhabited by strange and wondrous beings: magical lunamancers; undersea merfolk; wise birds; winged dragons; and Lily’s favorite, the heroic, leonine Rinn.
There was only one rule: don’t tell a soul.
But now, years later, Uncle Ebb is missing. Lily has learned the secret behind the tales, and soon Jasper will too. But there’s one big problem. You see, something terrible has happened in the Moon Realm. . . .
Illustrated by Carolyn Arcabascio. Book One in the award winning Moon Realm Series.

The Dragondain / Book Two / A Moon Realm Novel
It's the middle of the night, you need to send your brother to the Moon Realm, and he won’t wake up. So you improvise. . . .
When a confused Jasper awakes, he's convinced he's dreaming. But by the time he meets Greydor, Jasper understands that this is no dream. In fact, persuading the King of the Rinn to work with the men of Dain to defeat their common enemy is a nightmare. Then there’s the other side of the coin: convincing Tavin and Dubb that saddling a Rinn isn’t certain death. (“It’ll be fun!”) And perhaps even a greater worry: can he make friends with Dubb’s daughter Darce before she punches his lights out?
Lily has problems, too. There’s a little mousie scratching in her closet. Or at least, it sounds like a little mousie. Oh, and her second confrontation with Curse, and trying to form her first peerin. (Don’t you have to be from Dain to do that?) And where’s Ebb?
One thing’s for sure: now that Lily and Jasper have entered the Moon Realm, nothing can ever be the same again.
Illustrated by Carolyn Arcabascio. Book Two in the award winning Moon Realm Series.
The Dragondain is Available for E-Readers at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and iTunes iBookstore.

By 17I recently received this 5 Star review from a reader on Amazon who expressed beautifully my intent in writing By 17 with teachers in mind.
An exciting book of short stories with a "lesson to be learned" at the end of each story. This book is great for children, teens, and adults. A perfect book for a Language Arts teacher in grade school. My son is 10 and he thoroughly enjoyed reading each and every story and then "finding the moral in it." Great read...
J.C. Avid Reader
By 17 recounts the adventures of John 'the Crabber' White, a young boy growing up on the shores of Long Island, New York.
"He goes to the Yonkers Raceway with his uncle, Tony; starts a bike repair business with his brother; goes on a hunting trip with the McGee family that almost ends in tragedy; works for a blind shellfish-dealer named Capt. Kolonick; and meets a local girl named Laurie after almost floating away on a barge. Crabber even confronts death, both among his neighbors and in his own family. After wrestling with these challenges and character-building experiences, he discovers that his neighbors are good people willing to stand up for what’s right, despite the hardened exterior they choose to present. The stories are a blend of the humorous and the sentimental, the devastating and the hopeful... Bennett’s eagerness and sincerity shine through, giving some of the stories impressive power. The subjects of the stories can be surprising, too, with the death of a sibling followed by an encounter with the ghosts of long-lost children. ... the variation in themes is intriguing."~ Kirkus Reviews
I wanted By 17 to be a gentle reminder of the purpose and power of English literature. I hope that the student reader will enjoy meeting these characters in short form. The people of By 17 are easy to meet but hard to forget.

Hello, My name is Alex Rogers and I am the author of I'm Only Human After All and Drifting. The first book, I'm Only Human After All is a memoir of my experiences growing up as a victim of being bullied (Freshman year of HS till end of Sophomore year of HS). My goal for this book is to have it in the school system so that others can gain awareness on the issue. While the book primarily focuses on bullying, other issues that young adults face are present in the book which makes it a good read for the classroom.Back Cover text of I'm Only Human After All: What do you do if you find yourself suddenly, and without provocation, the target of high school aggression, relentless insults, and painful isolation? Such is the dilemma of teenager Alex Rogers, the main character in I'm Only Human After All, the thought-provoking, absorbing novel inspired by the real-life trials of the author by the same name. In this penetrating story, Rogers draws from his personal experiences to offer invaluable insight to students, teachers, and parents everywhere on today's increasingly common, and highly damaging, instances of bullying and cyber-bullying. The novel's poignant, reflective first-person narrative details all that bullied young adults confront, casting crucial new light on this timely topic to enable individuals to cope with this pervasive problem. I'm Only Human After All also represents the debut work of fiction in the ongoing "Empowerment" series based on the author's life that surrounds topics relevant today.
My second book, Drifting, is the second book in my series. It is written in the same manner as the first and is also a direct sequel. After my experiences with bullying, I find myself trying to rebuild my esteem and somehow end up with the wrong group of kids. They want me to act a certain way and do certain things, causing me to crumble under peer-pressure. This book's main themes are self-esteem, finding your identity, and dealing with peer-pressure. The time frame of this book is during my junior year of highschool so it is perfect for teens in that age group.
Here is the back cover text of Drifting: With his troubled past behind him and his older brother away for college, Alex finds himself searching for more. No longer does he wish to merely exist but also to belong. In Drifting, the sequel to I'm Only Human After All, Alex is taken under the wing of a more popular kid at school, Marcus, who introduces Alex to the underlying politics of the high school they attend.
With a newly found social life, Alex escapes from the monotonous pressures of life through frequent outings and late nights.Things seem to be fine until one critical moment changes everything, causing Alex to step back and contemplate the new path he has chosen.
Once again, Rogers draws from his personal experiences in Drifting, detailing his journey of coming into his own. In this openly expressive narrative, Rogers battles with peer-pressure, self-esteem, and self-acceptance as he re-tells his high school years.
Thank you for taking the time to read this post. If you are interested in implementing these books into your classroom, please message me if you have any questions.
Magical Ventures of Loli and Lenny
"Magical Ventures of Loli and Lenny," is a fantasy novella for children and middle grade in the age group of 7 years and above. Launched during the Christmas of 2012, this book focuses on animal and environmental issues.
The first volume "Trumpets in the Wild," exposes the young readers to the dangers of the interior most jungles of Africa to encounters with enchanted mystical beings, as they follow the two young protagonists on their magical missions for planet earth. It also touches on the subject of poaching and how it hurts an animal in a way children can understand. The story raises an awareness for the environment and imbibes a love for animals amongst the youngsters.
Besides being a magical thriller to pique the interest of any young reader, the novel is also a rich resource of information be it about the environment, science or general knowledge. It also speaks about profound friendships, courage, love, sacrifice and loyalty in the times of adversity.
The fantasy element, the wild life aspect and the exciting adventures detailed in a very lucid and easy manner will also incite the reluctant reader to read more and complete the book from start to finish. As for the voracious young reader this book would surely be another captivating addition to their ever extending book shelf.
"Magical Ventures of Loli and Lenny (Trumpets in the Wild),” was also listed in the "Hot New Releases in Magic & Wizards" in amazon.com and ranked 10th:

Hi, everyone! I'm Rysa Walker, author of Time's Twisted Arrow, the first book in the CHRONOS Files series. The book is YA sci-fi, but the time travel element means there is a solid chunk of history in there as well. This is probably unavoidable for me, since my day job is professor of history and government. Time's Twisted Arrow has been very well received by both teen and adult readers, with a 4.25 rating out of 99 rating (and 59 full reviews) here at Goodreads. The Kirkus Review was also very positive and I'm very excited that the book made the quarterfinals of the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award this year, where you can read the first few chapters of the book. The competition will be really stiff from the point on -- the judges will announce the top 5 out the remaining 100 on April 16-- but, at least I'll get a Publisher's Weekly review out of this if nothing else. ;)
I think Time's Twisted Arrow will be of special interest to teachers and librarians due to the extensive use of primary source materials. I'm of the firm belief that young readers remember at least as much history from the fiction they read as from their textbooks, so I endeavor to get it right. (Unlike some of the historical romances I read as a kid...still trying to undo some of those misconceptions :) In this book, the focus is on the 1893 Chicago World's Fair with a side order of serial killer, in the form of H. H. Holmes, who stalked young women at the Expo.
I've also put together a video learning module on primary sources (what they are, where to find good ones, and how I used them in the books) that can be used in your classes. A writing assignment geared toward the Common Core standards and materials at the Library of Congress is also included on the CHRONOS Files blog.
And yes, all of this is a marketing tool for my book, but it's also a self-interested attempt to ensure that students can recognize a primary source before they reach college and land in my women's history classes. I would love feedback from teachers and librarians (and anyone else!) on both the book and the learning module.
Thanks!
Rysa Walker
