Happy reading Yun. ♥
I experienced my last read in the exact same way. It had a perfect set up but it didn't nail the execution. I'm glad halfway through you settled into the story and enjoyed it. ♥
Great review, Yun 💙 I also don't gravitate towards war historical fiction and I'm glad this had aspects that you enjoyed.
fantastic review yun! it's unfortunate this didn't stretch to its full potential but i'm glad you still enjoyed some aspects!
Wonderful review! Sounds like this book suffers from too much stuff and that's occuring in lots of the books I'm reading lately.
Fantastic review, Yun! Glad this wasn’t an overall frustrating read, I agree how the first instalment in mystery series may often not reach its potential :)
So very fair, Yun. It's hard to enjoy something when it isn't a genre you prefer. Hope you love your next!
War historical fiction is not my cuppa either, so I get that. Shame the characters started blending into each other too. But good that the second half was better. Fair and honest review, Yun.

Suja wrote: "Well analyzed review Yun 💕. Would you categorize this under cozy mystery?"
Thanks, Suja! ❤️ I think it depends on what you mean by cozy. It isn't low stakes the way everyone nowadays thinks of cozy. It's really closer to Golden Age style.

Thanks, Nat! This seems to be a common theme among the first books in a mystery series.

Thanks, Thibault! Glad it's not just me with this preference!
Love that Golden Age style. Sounds like the author might have laid some groundwork in this one and the rest of the series will be more enjoyable.🥰
I have had similar experiences with first books in a series. Sometimes perseverance and reading the next book pays off. I did have my eye on this one and I think I'll still give it a go but have your thoughts in the back of my mind when I do. Wonderful review, Yun💞
Good point that the first book in a planned series is rarely the best, for the reasons you mentioned.
I also love the Golden Age of mysteries, especially how they did locked room mysteries.
Great review Yun!
Fair review, Yun! I love your usage of 'growing pains' to describe the writing growth curve. So true! :)

Yun...Excellent review! You certainly make a good point about the sometimes mindboggling task of absorbing atmosphere, setting and a large cast of characters when reading the debut novel of a new series.🤗
