Molli Jackson Ehlert “Also. Alistair Lowe. Dammit, I would gladly commit murder to keep that poor kid safe.” — This was my only thought pretty much the whole second half of the book. I will say I think the potential friendship between him and Isobel would have been much more interesting than a romantic one because damn he really needs a friend.

I'm honestly kind of shipping him with Gavin? I think Gavin at least is explicitly bi or pan, and I seem to recall a glancing reference to Alistair writing in his diary about a crush on a fictional villain. All of which kind of feels bad because I don't want to be more invested in an m/m relationship I've made up in my head than the m/f relationship that is actually on page ... but I really didn't get that much chemistry between Isobel and Alistair even though I liked them independently as characters? (Whereas the scene were Gavin and Alistair get drunk and faintly vulnerable together sizzles off the page).

For me (SPOILER-ISH INCOMING) the most significant bit of the Isobel/ Alistair relationship was right at the end when she casts her "see into your brain" curse on him and realises that whatever he feels for her, no matter how real it is, no matter how much she cares for him in return it will never be more important to him than how he feels about (careful language to minimise spoiler) the person he loves most.

I think characters like Alistair can be such a fucking pain to control in a text though: I mean, he's wonderfully written, but he's just such a wild scene stealer that it almost unbalances the book.

Alexis Hall Err, sorry, apparently I have MANY THOUGHTS about Alistair Lowe.

Kathleen in Oslo Thanks for the informative review! Think I will gift this to my Hunger Games & Harry Potter-obsessed preteen to buddy read. Encouraging thing about the youngs these days is that they (at least my kid and her friends) queer texts as a matter of course, so if there's a subtext to ship, she'll find it. Progress!

Molli Jackson Ehlert “I’m honestly kind of shopping him with Gavin?” — YES. Gavin absolutely shows physical attraction to him and there was indeed a mention of Alistair’s attraction to a man so I definitely expected something to come of this and am hoping that happens in the sequel.

It's a perfect blend, I think, for someone who likes The Hunger Games and HP - it's kind of The Hunger Games MEETs HP. It's dark with murder and betrayals but I don't think anything more than those two books. I hope they enjoy!

Honestly, Briony and Isobel were giving me VIBES too.

Although while I do feel Alistair and Gavin had more chemistry than Alistair and Isobel I don't want to imply that relationships between queer people are more real/authentic/better if they involve same gender couples.

Kate Bystrova Brilliant – I wasn't sold on the premise just going off the book description, but after reading your review think I'll give it a spin (and I very much look forward to being suckered in by Alistair, cheers for the heads up!)

This is a timely reminder to read book 2 which I've had for ages but I haven't got round to. Although embarrassingly I can remember close to nothing about book 1.
