Glad to find a group that appreciates the grit of a good crime story. Like a lot of you, I grew up completely hooked on old-school pulp fiction and noir. Those atmospheric, hard-hitting stories always stuck with me, and recently I decided it was time to put my own spin on them.
I’m writing as Mick Steele, and I wanted to introduce you to my protagonist, Nicky, and the world of Aces.
My goal was to create a series that feels like a love letter to the old-school classics, but with some distinct modern twists. If you're a purist, you might notice right away that Nicky's story doesn't fit neatly into a single box. It isn't perfectly traditional noir, it isn't purely hardboiled, and it isn't quite cyberpunk either.
That genre defiance is entirely by design. I wanted to see what happens when you take the DNA of classic American crime fiction and drop it into a setting that plays by its own rules.
I'm curious if anyone else here enjoys fiction that color outside the lines of traditional noir? Excited to hear what you guys are reading and to dive into the threads!
