Julie This is a new author to me.
Thanks for the helpful review.

message 2: by Anne (new)

Anne You're welcome, Julie! Hope you end up enjoying this book if you read it.

message 3: by Brenda P (new)

Brenda P Thanks for your honest review! I think I will try this one out. I have no idea where to start with horror books and it’s a genre I want to get into.

message 4: by Anne (new)

Anne Horror has so many sub-genres, too! I get it.

message 5: by Chad (new)

Chad Stephen King and Grady Hendrix are two good places to start Brenda. The good thing is that most horror is stand alone so you can typically just pick up a book and try it out without any previous baggage.

Another option if you have Prime is they did a couple of free short story collections that you can read on a kindle. One was called Creature Feature. Grady Hendrix is in there. So is Stephen King's son, Joe Hill, who is a talented horror writer as well. Anyway, I find these types of collections a good way to try out new horror writers.

Anne Yeah, collections are always a good recommendation. Good call, Chad.
Hendrix and King are juggernauts, but they are both hit or miss with me when it comes to horror. There are a lot of ways to go with horror, so dip your toes into whatever looks interesting, and you'll end up with a better idea of what you want.

Chad King's had a couple of clunkers in the 90s around the Gerald's Game era. I really like all of his work before that and there is a LOT. I burned through all of his books in high school. Fell off some in the last 10 years or so. His short story collections like Skeleton Crew and Different Seasons are the bomb.

The Shivers collection was the other one that was on Prime. Hill and Hendrix have stories in that one too along with Stephen Graham Jones who is another horror author worth checking out. I read a couple of his books last year.

message 8: by Anne (new)

Anne I've only read one book by Jones and really hated it. But if you're giving him the thumbs up, I'd go back for more.
Early Steven King is pretty good stuff. I read so much of it before Goodreads was a thing, and I don't remember what all of his collections I got into. Probably should go back for those again at some point.

message 9: by Chad (new)

Chad I can't remember a single bad thing of his from the 70s or 80s. Pretty much everything up through Needful Things. There were a few I hated in the mid 90s, Rose Madder, Deloris Claborne, Gerald's Game. They almost felt like they were ghost written by someone else.

I read I Was a Teenage Slasher by Jones last year and dug it. I liked that comic he did too with Native Americans trying to travel back in time to change history so that white people don't take over North America. I plan on reading The Buffalo Hunter Hunter too as soon as I find some time.

message 10: by Anne (new)

Anne I Was a Teenage Slasher...hmmm. That one sounds interesting. I'll give him a second look.

message 11: by Chad (new)

Chad It posits that you can catch being a serial killer like a cold.

message 12: by Anne (new)

Anne Oh, that's kind of cool. Alright. I have it on hold at my library.

message 13: by Chad (new)

Chad I said serial killer but I meant Slasher, like a Jason type.

message 14: by Anne (new)

Anne I got what you meant. It looks fun.

message 15: by Laura (new)

Thank you, Laura! It was a really good story.

message 17: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Pongratz I'm reading this one right now. I get what you mean with the chick lit vibe. It's fun so far!

message 18: by Anne (new)

Anne It is! And I've read several of her other books now, and I have to say I like all of those a lot more than this one.

Oh okay, good to know! I have a feeling I'm going to be addicted to this author's works then.
