Well, you've done what you set out to do: described without revealing. And intrigued, and amused. Ticks all the boxes!
I'm so pleased you liked it. I knew all wasn't going to end in a rosy glow (hope that's not a spoiler) but, like you, I was whacked by the climax, had not seen it coming.

Thanks, Karen! While reading it, I was reminded of your review of Dept. of Speculation. As I'm sure you realize, this is of the latter camp (as described in the 1st sentence of said review), though the style is its own.

And I'm so pleased you 'found' this book for me, Lyn.
Just read EmmKay's review of this - she liked but gave 3 stars. It's a quirky idea - the inside story of libraries.

I read her review yesterday. I've just about given up on the "idea" of stars -- they can mean so many different things to different people. I still use them, but I try not to let them sway me, much better for me to focus on a reviewer's content.
I wish I could remember the book's contents! I may have to read again one day.

Thanks, Emmkay. And I agree with your review of this even though I gave the book more stars. :) Stars are a "feeling" and I try not to overthink them.
I just finished, Teresa, and got enough out of just writing the review/responding to comments, that I started to feel that I should raise my 3 stars to 4. I definitely found this to be a successful, artful, quality experience. When I saw your comment about stars meaning little, I laughed. So cool that you also responded to the physical book!

Thanks to my reading your review yesterday, Jennifer, I reread mine and discovered (once again) that I don't remember what affected me so much during my reading of the book and I really should read this again!
I've just finished the film DARKEST MIRIAM about an hour ago and I'm shaking, trying to keep it together. I must read this.
