What I find most effective in horror is a sense of the liminal. You hear something, but it *could* have a reasonable explanation. This is something I have explored through film. I'm a relative ignoramus with regard to horror literature, but I am reading Adam Cosco's The End, which has a nice slow burn feel, but lacks that liminal quality so far (I'm about 10% in).

This group is for readers who believe horror doesn’t need to shout to be effective.
Some of the most disturbing stories aren’t about monsters, but about places that feel wrong — houses, towns, or landscapes that seem quietly hostile.
To begin the conversation:
What unsettles you more in horror — explicit threats, or environments that feel wrong even when nothing happens?
