What I find interesting about Ruth is how she almost seems to understand more than she lets on, even when she’s acting selfish or disruptive. It gives her a kind of sad defensiveness rather than making her just an obstacle. Ishiguro’s friendships often feel shaped by things the characters don’t quite know how to say.
