Pretty much my thoughts and sentiments on this exactly: D&D was something like the 3rd or 4th RPG I played, and I never liked it much because the rules felt archaic and convoluted to me even in 1985, but because it basically created something which one could justifiably say is responsible for much of my career, I find Peterson's books fascinating. Considering the dryness of the focal subject matter in this one, I think he did a remarkable job making it readable.
