Jonathan, my memory is hazy, but I seem to remember one reviewer of Sinfonia Domestica writing something about "What a fuss over giving a baby its bath", or something like that.

😂 Very good, Gary! I didn't come across that one in this collection though, you might've seen it elsewhere. The only time "baby" has been mentioned alongside the work was actually as collateral during a critique of Ravel's Mother Goose Suite:
"If these Esquisses enfantines received their proper title, they would be labeled Scenes from Second Childhood. But since Richard Strauss paraded his monster baby in Sinfonia Domestica, children in music have not been as simple and artless as they once were."
