Quo Richard: Just making it through a 700+ page book not written by Tolstoy or Dostoevsky seems a victory, given the investment of time involved. John Boyne's The Heart's Invisible Furies has an amazing 25,000+ G/R reviews & a 4.5 rating but isn't a book or an author I am familiar with, in spite of reading widely. I liked your comment about the book's ability to combine a social critique with humor, as indicated not very easy to accomplish. If nothing else, by reading your review, I learned about a book with a rather substantial following. Bill

But he has quite an output of both adult and books for younger readers (I am not quite sure what age group). I've often noticed them on bookshelves in bookshops in the UK. At times this book is wonderful, so it may well be that amongst his writings there are fantastic books. He is most well known for the book The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, which I think was made into a film of the same name.
