Ruth Goodman has made some great documentaries for the BBC along these lines. Lots of clips are available on Youtube. Lucy has some good ones too, but Ruth is the best! Tudor Monastery Farm, The Victorian Slum, etc are some of my favourites.
This is my favorite of her works, though she has a lot of good ones. Led to interesting reflections on path dependency.
Why are so many social histories British? Not complaining, just wondering.
Because the system, government, education, et al, supports culture.
Not just one picture of culture, but a broad culture, historical, literary, visual, all developed and fostered within a heritage which includes the stain and lessons of empire: an empire that started by erasing borders at home and galloped on around the world.
