Olivia The dated journal structure jumps from brief entries to long explanations, including Sheever refusing to write “secrets” and then returning later to explain himself. Talk about how those gaps and returns affect tension and trust in his narration.

K. Ritz For Sheever, writing in the journal is akin to scratching an itch. The act itself reminds him that he is more than a simple cook. But he doesn't want to delve into painful memories or reveal secrets from his past. When he begins the journal, he opts to blather about things of no consequence, describing where he is and the people around him. Eventually deeper topics emerge, some of which scorch him so badly he reverts to harmless blather again. He is a man at war with his past, both hating and missing it, and hoping for salvation.
