Beautiful sweetheart...I love the deep dark of winter myself ....wishing you a heartfelt lovely holiday season !
I love the passages you posted and the comparisons you made, what a picture, I imagined you reading this book in a warm cafe, Candi. A lovely review.
Perfect timing! I made sure to go out and watch the sun set this evening and said a little blessing. Wishing for a little Solstice magic for you, my friend.
xoxo
I’m glad you found your comforting caramel hot chocolate feeling in this collection, Candi. A refreshing review.
Fantastic review, Candi! It’s so satisfying when we find a great bookstore when out of town, truly special. I loved the quotes you pulled. Ha, you can make me add any book you like to my toppling TBR pile! Stop it already!
Excellent review, friend.
The winter solstice is the turning point, and now the days are getting longer, etc., etc… but England will keep looking like Mordor at least until the end of March. Not being negative — I just don’t want to look like I’m in denial. 🥲
Great quotes, Candita. Thanks for the introduction to Nina MacLaughlin, who seems like my kinda gal. And I do love me some dark gloomy winter weather; the image of an orange glow from windows is a very powerful one, for me.

Thanks so much, my dear! I have a love-hate relationship with winter :D It is appealing to imagine a weekend all cuddled up with a soft blanket, a book, and a hot cocoa on the couch. The reality is that I rarely have time for that :) I wish you a joyful and peaceful holiday!

Thanks a bunch, Tatevik. The language in this one is luscious! I didn't actually read this in a cafe, but I would highly recommend doing that! I saved it for bedtime reading, which was in itself rather comfy :)

Oddly enough, I didn't realize it when I first thought about writing a review! I am watching a friend's dog and decided to post a review while this gorgeous Golden Retriever snoozed by my side. This book was slim and seemed easy enough to squeeze in. As I started typing, I recalled the serendipity of the timing, Fionnula!!! :)

That's a great idea, Julie. I missed the sunset but that was because I was able to spend time with my kids who are in from out of town :) That made it a great tradeoff. I wish you some of that magic as well, my friend! XO
Diane wrote: "Solstice is a turning point Candi. Maybe this is yours!"
So true, Diane! My fingers and toes are crossed :)
Such a lovely review, Candi, and one that definitely has me adding this collection to my TBR. The passages you included are beautiful. As I age, I have found myself becoming more and more a seasonal reader for some reason and these essays sound perfect for the winter solstice.
Cheryl wrote: "I’m glad you found your comforting caramel hot chocolate feeling in this collection, Candi. A refreshing review."
It was a pleasure for sure, Cheryl. Just what I needed at the moment. Thank you :)

Thanks so much, Debbie! The first thing I do when I visit any town or city - I get on Google maps and search "bookstore near me". Not joking, I really do! :D You could read this book in one sitting. Or half a sitting! :)

Thanks a bunch, friend! It's really the same here, despite the days starting to lengthen! It looks like the apocalypse out there right now :D And, we are expecting a ton of snow later today. Ugh! I want a bit of sunshine. Is that too much to ask?! :D
Candi...Thank you for this lovely winter solstice review! I'm going out to get a caramel hot chocolate....🧡

Thank you, Justin. MacLaughlin also has a Summer Solstice book which I plan to read - hopefully on the perfect day as well. Dark gloomy weather can serve a purpose I suppose; unfortunately, I find myself having to be out and about during it far too much! Maybe I can change that up a bit this coming week and grab a cozy blanket and a book and spend it as it should be :)
Laysee wrote: "Lovely review, Candi. Thank you for sharing the lyrical excerpts from this essay. I enjoyed them."
Many thanks, Laysee. I'm pleased you enjoyed those quotes - there were so many beautifully written passages to choose from! :)

Thanks a bunch, K! Seasonal reading choices bring some additional comfort, I believe :) It's something I consider on occasion when choosing a book. I hope you find lots to like here if you pick it up!

You are quite welcome, Fran! Thanks for stopping by! Savor every sip of that caramel hot chocolate :) :)
What a lovely review, Candi—thanks so much for the introduction, I’m adding. This time of year is hard for me, so I appreciate the perspective, and those quotes are perfect. I didn’t know you went to a conference in November, hope it was a good experience. I hadn’t been reviewing much this Fall, either, but plan to now—I’m hoping you will, too. And now I’m going to see where I can get a caramel hot chocolate. That’s a good friend!

Thank you so much, Jennifer. I struggle at this time of year as well. In fact, l slept for around 12 hours on and off on NYE. How lame is that?! :D The conference was a great experience and one I hope I can repeat again in the future. I'll see how reviewing goes for me with the new year. In theory, I'd like to get back into it more, but in practice it might not be very doable! Hope you find that hot cocoa and cheers to the New Year, my friend!!
Too late to squeeze this in before the year ended, but not to enjoy reading your thoughtful review and well-picked, elegant quotes a second time around, Candi. I love how you manage to give a touch of positivity to this time in which we might long for warmth and daylight. Even it is stone cold here now, currently I am revelling in the snow we are getting this year as such event has become rare over the years - how beautiful and peaceful the streets look suddenly...

Perhaps at the next winter solstice, you can savor the words in this slim volume, Ilse! The hardest part about this time of year is heading to work in the dark and then coming home from work in the near dark. So, I look forward to even a small bit of warmth and sunlight. I can imagine it would be exciting to see the snow if it's not a frequent occurrence. Sometimes I feel that way with the first snow of the season - it can look quite pretty! Thanks very much for your lovely comment :)
