Thanks much for the kind wishes, Fran! Alas, the book turned out to provide the exact same experience as before. 😢

Heather Adores Books Yeah, no, not for me. Honest review, Rosh!

message 4: by Tiziana (new)

Tiziana I also read the book as a child and then as a teenager. I loved it and hadn't thought of any of the things you pointed out.
As an adult, reading your negative points, I agree with you, but in the '70s and '80s, I was little, and all I could see was a good little girl who, having become poor, was treated badly, but who hadn't lost her goodness. I liked the ending, and although I repeat, I understand all your points, and as an adult, I agree with you, I prefer to remember only the good and positive parts of the story because it's part of my fond childhood memories.
Good review anyway !! ;-)

Thibault Busschots I really like that you’re tackling a read from the past, to see if your opinion about it still stands after you’ve grown as a person. Though it’s clear you already were very smart and had good taste when you read it the first time. Shame the author didn’t experience India for herself before writing this story. And kids do get emotional scars from being casually bullied with words like that. Good review, Rosh.

message 6: by Kealyn (new)

Kealyn Yes, some books really need to be read with the mindset of the time period they were written in. But that sometimes doesn't make it any less hard to deal with issues that are no go's nowadays. Beautiful and fair review. ♥

message 7: by Darla (new)

Darla A fair and honest review. Thanks for sharing your perspective in such a winsome way, Rosh.

Tina (I can now make 20 comments! Better!) I remember reading this with my daughter. I did like it but it wasn't my favourite. We loved, "The Rackety-Packetty House."

message 9: by Mary Beth (new)

Mary Beth Fantastic review! 🩷 Sorry that this one was disappointing. Hope you are loving your current read.

message 10: by Myra (new)

Myra The best way to experience this story is to watch the film where Sara Crewe is played by Shirley Temple. I love it!

message 11: by Sarah (new)

Sarah A fair and fantastic review, Rosh!! 🥰❤️😘😍 I'm so sorry it was disappointing!! 😭😭 I hope your next read will be a million times better!! 💓💓

message 12: by Nika (new)

Nika I really appreciate your honest and well-argued opinion.
I haven't read this book, nor do I plan to. But I remember reading another story by this author, Little Lord Fauntleroy. I read it when I was a kid, so I wasn't able to spot certain incongruities in the plot and descriptions that I would probably notice if I reread it now. :) Totally get why you added 1 star considering when it was written, though. It seems that some aspects in such books usually don't age well.
Great review, dear Rosh!

message 13: by Ari (new)

Ari Damoulakis Have you ever tried her one book, A Lady of Quality? I think that for me was one of her strangest. Very different times back then.

message 14: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Orlopp I admire you for re-reading something you didn't originally enjoy. Sounds like it confirmed your original opinion. Onward to a 4 or 5-star book!

Shelley's Book Nook A wonderful review, Rosh. The lack of layering is a great way to describe flat characters. 🤗💕

message 16: by Nancy (new)

Nancy This is a really thoughtful and thorough review, Rosh. I’m not familiar with this one, but maybe that isn’t a bad thing. 🩷

Saranya ⋆☕︎ ˖ [hibernating] Awww I really love this story! Sara and her little friend have my whole heart! Such a wonderful review, Rosh! Glad you loved this too<3

message 18: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra I remember reading this one, but I don't remember anything about it 😉 Some children's classics don't age well at all... I am sorry this was a disappointment, dear Rosh! Your review is wonderful and insightful 🫶

message 19: by V.D. (new)

V.D. Taylor Hope your next read is better!!!🖤💗

message 20: by Srivalli (new)

Srivalli (Semi-Hiatus) Ah, I haven't read this one, and it looks like I don't have to either. Cutesy cover for this edition, though.
Yet another book that didn't age well! 😕
Superb review, Rosh. 💖

message 21: by Koisty (new)

Koisty Ooof sorry this didn't work for you! Hope your next book is better!

message 22: by Mark (new)

Mark Porton This is a great review Rosh, I love it. I also like the fact this has such a history with you, from when you were 8 years old, no less!!! It's a shame this one didn't pack any surprises and it glossed over the terrible aspects of colonialism, you made a good case for this only being a 2-star read. Great stuff 🤗🎈🦘

message 23: by Mai (new)

Mai H. Was it me lol? I loved this book growing up

message 24: by Jayne (new)

Jayne Fabulous review, Rosh. I read this many, many years ago. I remember liking the book and loving the author's "The Secret Garden". And I certainly don't remember the protagonist as being referred to as "rich yet kind-hearted." I hope you love your next one.

message 25: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Rosh!! So glad to see you review this. I’m reading the Secret Garden right now, and I’m having the same issues with the portrayal of India :/ in the secret garden it feels like the book is at least saying that Mary is spoiled and unkind and thus her portrayal can’t really be taken as “the truth” but rather as the perception of (at the time) a spoiled little girl who is entitled, however it still makes me uncomfortable in a story that would otherwise be a favorite. I don’t love to hear that in this story where the main character is characterized as thoroughly good, there seems to be the same portrayal :/

Alya ( occasional comment restriction ) Hope ur next read is better ♥️

Persephone's Pomegranate Oh, I'm sorry about the terrible portrayal of India. I hate stereotypes. That would have made me angry as well. And calling children stupid, ugly, and fat? Yuck. What a bummer. Your criticism is valid. Great, honest review, Rosh.
