How did you do it? did you read it really super fast so you don't even know what's happening. That's what I would do if I had to read Dracula.
THANK YOU. I thought it was a great short story with Jonathan at the beginning that devolved into the main characters telling each other how much they love each other.
I couldn't agree more. I found this book very boring and all the characters wasted so much time wallowing in self pity. All the guys so in love with Lucy, but as soon as she's out of the picture they're immediately ready to die for another woman. If I was Lucy I'd be pissed
Really, I thought I was the only one. Boring as hell after Jonathan's first story inside the castle.
I was *so* excited by the first section with Harker - genuinely scary stuff, well-executed. The remaining 80% or so of the book...oh God, I was so glad when it ended. I rate it at 3 stars, because the Harker section at the beginning really is that good.
I am upto page 267 and at the minute it seems to be going into a gay bromance novel - with Mina as the reason to keep straight
My thoughts exactly.
I do think there are little sparks of interesting material throughout, aside from the initial chills of Harker's experience in Dracula's castle: like when Dracula first arrives in Whitby, when Lucy starts to deteriorate into this insane shell of her former self, there were some well-described images there.
I also quite liked Renfield as well, his whole side story was probably one of the most interesting parts of the book. I liked that there were things going on that you knew were Dracula's doing, even if Stoker wouldn't outright say it until later on in the story.
But EVERYTHING ELSE lol, the superfluous, melodramatic rantings of Van Helsing and Seward and their praise for Mina and Lucy, they just go on for way too long. All this talking and rambling on and preparing and planning and shit. It gives me a headache.
Harker's part is definitely the highlight of the book, which unfortunately is the first part of the novel.
everything said before me in this thread...l cannot agree more. I could waste my time by listing every little thing that made me want want to choke each and every character, then the author, but alas! alas! he is already dead.
If you liked the beginning, "Dracula's Guest" is a good short story that is actually a deleted chapter from early in the book published after Stoker's death. Really he should have made it a horror novel instead of turning to adventures-across-Europe, because the early horror sequences were actually good.
I agree, many of the characters who are male absolutely adore the women yet they are very sexist? It puts out a strange and contradicting message but I think it serves a purpose. My favorite part of the book was when Van Helsing was trying to save Lucy whereas the worst was the first couple chapters of the book which had pointless details.
That’s exactly how I am reading it. I read a chunk in between other books. It’s hard for me to get through. It’s my dads favorite book and he rereads it all the time. I don’t get it!
It's a good thing that all of you weren't around when the book was published or it would have been in remainders instead of being a best seller and we wouldn't have had any of the vampire books and movies that were based on it.
This is exactly what I felt. The most interesting part was definitely Harker at the beginning, but the only characters that I liked were Mina and Renfield. The others just felt shallow and weak.
So glad others feel the same. All these men are meant to be brilliant and yet they fail at basically everything they do. All that and then to end the story in the most anticlimactic way possible.
I wonder if it’s a tougher read because we have SO MUCH vampire lore out there now??i mean, how many vampire movies have been made since the book was first published?
I am enjoying the book a lot, and find the mysteries surrounding all of the events unfolding very intriguing. My only real issue is I know much of what’s going on, already, so it feels slower than it probably felt when it first was released. Well, that, and I think Lucy had too many blood transfusions!
