Thank you, Susie, for taking the time to read Ascension and share your thoughts. I genuinely value all reviews, positive and critical alike, and I appreciate the opportunity to respond to a few of your concerns.
Ascension is the first installment in a series, and as many fantasy and paranormal readers know, the opening book is often focused on laying the foundation: introducing the world, establishing the rules of the supernatural, and allowing readers to truly get to know the characters. My characters have endured significant personal and family struggles, and they deeply love one another. When someone they care about is hurting, Nora’s emotional responses, including tears, are intentional and reflective of who she is.
This story is meant to be emotional at its core. It follows young characters learning how to navigate life, faith, family conflict, and the spiritual realm all at once. It is also a romance, but a slow-burn romance by design. Rather than rushing two characters together before they’re ready, I wanted to show growth, healing, and self-awareness first. That slower pace is not for everyone, but it is central to the story I set out to tell.
In terms of action, the book includes multiple encounters (3 battles) with supernatural creatures as well as training sequences. The characters don’t suddenly wake up knowing how to fight. They have to learn, struggle, and prepare, which felt realistic for a first book in a fantasy/paranormal series.
Finally, Ascension is a work of fiction, and dialogue plays an important role in bringing the story to life. When I write, I visualize the scenes as if they’re unfolding on screen, and conversation is a key part of making characters feel real and engaging.
Thank you again for reading my book and for sharing your perspective. I understand that Ascension may not be for every reader, and that’s okay. it simply wasn’t the right fit for you.
