I concur.
And there's a guy who for a while is a paparazzo but only for a while before becoming an EMT cos that happens.
Truth is stranger than fiction... I have a BA and MA in English Literature, and I'm planning to become a doctor of medicine!
I was trying to figure out what to say about this disappointing book. You stated it perfectly! I can't figure out what all the buzz is about.
So glad to find 'my people'. Haha. I'm so confused why anyone liked this. I certainly agree with everything you said!
I was waiting for some clever plot twist to happen the entire time... Nothing. There were a few interesting moments, like Finding out that Tyler became the prophet. The abandoned plane intrigued me. But very little was done with any of this and there was so little character development that I would've been bored regardless.
What Mary said. This review is a service to the goodreads community and the larger population of persons who can distinguish the good writing form the poor.
Absolutely completely agree. Took me so long to get through this book, constantly asking myself: why am I reading this. Very accurate review!
I'm wondering exactly the same.... What about this got it an honor??? So completely boring and nothing original!
Couldn't agree more! Too many characters that were never fully developed. The ones that she did spend a few chapters on we're boring. Nothing ever came together.
Oh good, I'm not the only one who hated this book! I only got through the first 60 odd pages before I tossed it on the coffee table. After reading your review, I'm glad I didn't finish.
I'm at section 3 of the book. Are there really more comic book/graphic novel cross over mistakes? Because I just read the first mistake (vol 1. no.1, vol 1. no.2 just doesn't exist) and it bugged me a lot, as an avid reader of graphic novels!
Clark doesn't marry a woman? Jeevan the former paparazzo marries a woman however, Clark lives out his days in Severn City Airport.
The overall premise of the novel was not bad, but I agree that character development was very weak. Jeevan turns up at various times but we never really get to know his character over the 15+ year time span; Tyler becomes the Prophet...how? And why does "the boy" so conveniently shoot him just before he is to kill Kirsten? What happened to Elizabeth? Arthur is a stereotype of an over-the-hill actor - he's rich, shallow, and has nostalgic feelings for his "home island" that he couldn't wait to leave when he was younger, but on the (unbeknownst to him) last day of his life he decides to cover his girlfriend's college debts AND move to Israel to be closer to his one and only son, whose birthday he forgot. Sure.
Kirsten can throw knives like Katniss Everdeen slings arrows and has connections to just about every other character in the novel...but fails to emerge as a fully-rounded character. Apparently she still loves Sayid (why?) but so desperately misses Dieter after he's gone. Ok...but who was Dieter again? What about August?
Jack covered Miranda's character (or lack thereof in terms of plausibility), leaving the members of the Traveling Symphony, who are so underdeveloped that their survival becomes a non-issue. And their combination of Shakespeare and music performance only serves to further blur their features...or purpose.
Finally, the people at the airport. There are some vague mentions of their living circumstances and means of survival with the only memorable detail being Clark's 'museum,' but even that fails to become anything other than a quirky feature of their community.
I agree with you, Jack. The book is terrible. The author demonstrates that she knows nothing about Shakespeare or symphonies. Shakespeare plays aren't set to music. She uses all the wrong terminology to describe a symphony and its players. She said some really ignorant things when it comes to symphonies and why the players were arguing or weren't getting along.
I find this book vapid and disappointing
I am 40 pages from the end and have been waiting since page 2 for it to be a real novel.
"The characters are so poorly drawn"--amen. An apocalyptic book should, at the very least, not bore the pants off you, but this one was a struggle to get through and I never cared about any of the characters except Miranda who sort of fades away.
Oh man. This was such a terrible book. So terrible. About 10 decent paragraphs but the rest was so hokey and poorly done.
I'm so glad you wrote this review. I always feel a bit surprised when I see the glowing reviews and then I'm lukewarm. I didn't hate the book, but I can see how someone might. It certainly wasn't the masterpiece most reviewers claim to have read.
I've been struggling to finish the book. I'm over halfway through and still don't care. Fell asleep reading today. Can anyone give me a reason to finish this book?!
Great review. Thanks for writing it so I didn't have to. I'd also just like to add that all the time flipping got really annoying and did nothing to enhance the story for me. Also, it kinda bugged me that Miranda and Pablo are using cell phones (with texting) circa 1999 when they can barely pay the rent.
I couldn't get past the fact that, after 99 percent of the world's population had perished in two weeks, no one on their 1000 mile journeys (ie Jeevan) never pass a giant grocery store full of non perishable food that would last them a decade. Not to mention all the Wal-Marts and endless strip malls of variety stores. You learn to hunt deer but you can't break into a Loblaws?
I am waiting for my book club meeting to add my rating and review, but it is good to know I am not alone in my confusion over the popularity of this book. I didn't mind the characters so much, but I didn't love them either. Its the lack of logic/explanation. Phone networks die 8 days after Jeevan barricades himself in the apartment with his brother; ok, why? The survivors find celebrity mags and TV Guides (really?!) but no one goes to the library to read about digging a well, farming or first aid/medicine? Sorry, I have been ranting to my family and the book has become somewhat of a joke to me.
