I wanted to take a moment to warn everybody about a very detailed scam I uncovered. It started with an uninitiated email from a prominent and currently successful contemporary writer. This began about two weeks before Christmas. We exchanged emails about once a week, and I kept asking myself - why is she talking to me? After Christmas, she offered to introduce me to her agent. I saw this as a sign that something was up, but I played along to see where it was going. I was suspicious and started to copy all the emails, and I didn’t divulge any details. I said I was interested, and in a few days, I got an email from her agent. That gave me time to verify who that agent was, and guess what. They had the name correct. We went back and forth, playing the game for about a week, when she said that for us to continue, I would need to upgrade my SEO for Amazon and Goodreads. It was getting interesting, so I played again. I was directed to a site to make that connection, and this person made a quick proposal to work on my SEO.
I was scammed earlier this year because I have so little experience. But this was multifaceted, and they took their time until I stopped communicating. Now I get a “What’s Up” email about every other day.
Look out for this type of sophisticated scam. All the names were correct, and the approach wasn’t forced.
