David Brilliant and well stated review Marc. Nice to see the comparisons to The Iliad. Amazing that they were written so long ago and still stand on their own.

Thanks again, David. I guess it will remain a mystery how such ingenious pieces of literature were produced so early in Greek history, just a few decades after the Greek alphabet were invented. As lots of experts have indicated this has to do with the long oral tradition in archaic Greece and the influence of Near Eastern cultures. But still, putting this in writing in the way they did with the Ilias and the Odyssee that demands experience ànd genius! Regularly comparisons are made with the biblical writings, but these were put to paper centuries after the Greek ones.

Heidi C. Impressive review! I especially like your comparison to the Iliad.
A suggestion: try reading 'Resisti Cuore' by Alessandro d'Avenia

David Goldman Great review. Like you, I was underwhelmed with the Odessey after reading the Illiad (both Fagles). But I came back it again during a group read on Public Space featuring the Watson translation. Both helped me warm up to the text and I found much of what I thought of as flaws (the episodic narrative Odysseus is an ass) to be features the second time. Thanks for the translation comparisons!

Thanks, Heidi, for the tip. And, con un piccolo ritardo: Buon Natale!

Thanks, David. I guess I ought to tackle it again and give it a new chance. But some many other books are waiting... You know the feeling!
