Victoria Zigler We have a thread for non-fiction books. But what about those fictional stories that exist to entertain children while also teaching them?

They could be historical fiction, books that teach you about maths or science while also telling a story, books where fictional characters take you on learning adventures, or whatever.

Do you know of any books like that? If so, post them below.

message 2: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Zigler A series that immediately springs to mind is Donna Maguire's "Silly Willy Winston" books, of which The Wacky World of Silly Willy Winston - an ordinary pet with extraordinary adventures is the first book.

message 3: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Zigler Thanks for posting your recommendations, Thomai, and good luck with your own series.

I actually only started this thread after reading your introduction, since I thought it was a great topic to have.

E.C. Kraeft Hey guys, I like the topic page for educational books. I am always trying to add to my classroom and home library. However, I was wondering if you've come across a lot of books with diverse characters; children with different backgrounds. I am about to check out listopia.

Not that I can think of off the top of my head. However, I'll start a topic thread for that, and perhaps others will come post about any they've found. Also, perhaps you can post about any you discover on the thread I start for it?

Steven A. Hello, I'm new to this group. The children's education topic caught my interest so I decided to join.
I have written such a book - [Wisdom's Way: Tales, Treasure, Truths|14457103] Wisdom's Way Tales, Treasure, Truths by Steven A. Barben - a collection of original short stories. It's more about learning to better understand each other and improve behavior by opening a door into different ways of thinking and perspectives so children, as well as adults can be more careful, thoughtful, and considerate in the ways they act toward one another. So it's not so much about school subject topics (though some of the stories relate to them) as it is about considering thoughts and feelings, which is probably just as important for our children and youth. I wouldn't recommend it for the very young, it would probably be most suitable for children from about 8 years to early teens. Just making you all aware.

message 7: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Zigler Thanks for making everyone aware of your book, Steven. Yes, that sort of education is just as important.

message 8: by Beverly (new)

Beverly Stuart J. Murphy has written many picture book fiction stories, all of which feature math concepts, such as:
Betcha! Estimating
Every Buddy Counts
Double the Ducks
It's About Time!
More or Less
and many more.

message 9: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Zigler Thanks for sharing those, Beverly.

C.P. Siebenhuener Hello! I would like to re-introduce my children's book, "But What if I Don't Understand?" It was originally released in 2009 by Tate Publishing. It is a story about a young girl who is afraid to speak up/raise her hand in class and ask for help when she doesn't understand what is being taught. A great resource for teachers and parents!!
Tate is no longer in business. My book is still listed on Goodreads if you look it up, but the version that comes up is not the updated one (it is the Tate one).
Please check out my book on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/But-What-Dont-...) while I work out the kinks and get the updated version on Goodreads! Thank you everyone!!

Weeva, A Social Publisher The Inventor in the Pink Pajamas, part of the new STEM series If Not You Then Who? is a book that teaches kids about everyday inventions. Where ideas come from and how they are protected by Intellectual Property. The goal of the book is to inspire kids to create their own inventions by looking around at everyday problems and imagining how they could be solved. Our message is that no dream is too big or dreamer too small to make a difference. Kids really like the hardcover book.

Jane My Blank Page the Power of Imagination is a story that teaches kids about their imagination. The goal of the book is to get kids to use their creative muscles and chase their dreams. It's a perfect story to read to get kids and teaches them to put their electronics down, especially in this age of technology. Kids learn how to use what they have around them to create their own stories, which are skills they can use in their future. MY BLANK PAGE THE POWER OF IMAGINATION

Hi, Victoria and members of this group! In response to Victoria’s question above, I would like to suggest this fairytale-inspired illustrated children’s book. Although fictional, it has a non-fiction section for parents and guardians of children with dyslexia that includes information on this learning disorder, plus tips on how to manage it.
