Hannah Miller Hi! I'm looking for free beta readers for my story. It's had some editing and I'm hoping to hear a few readers' POVs about how the story works now. Word count is slightly bananas at 180k, but several people have already read it without complaints on the length. :-) I don't need in-depth feedback at this point.

Blurb:

When 19-year-old Matthew Blackwood is snatched out of his bedbug-ridden apartment by three masked invaders against his will, all he can really fight for is damage control: don’t get too injured. Maybe don’t die. And don’t let Mama hear anything about his plight.

He’s spent the past year trying to break free from his stifling mother and move out of the dark shadow of his late trouble-seeking deadbeat father. Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, they’d said. He hasn’t spoken to Mama in a year, and he’d finally been getting somewhere in life.

Well, now he’s shackled in a crumbling Victorian farmhouse like some damsel in distress. And his captors turn out to be none but his widowed stepmother and her two henchmen brothers. And if he wants freedom, he’s going to have to make sacrifices. Deadly ones. Ones that could risk the life of his mother. His little brother. His ex-best friend.

Mama isn’t going to be proud of her boy.

Drag a Horse to Water is a sprawling, wild ride of a thriller about buried secrets, guilt, redemption, and a lost young man just trying to find his way home.

I.Y Emendator Hi Hannah, this sounds like a tense, character-driven thriller with a strong voice and a lot of emotional weight behind it. The family dynamics, especially the pull between Matthew, his mother, and the past he’s trying to escape, come through clearly in the blurb, and the setup feels both unsettling and compelling.

Since you’re mainly looking for reader POVs rather than deep critique, I’d be happy to help as a beta reader and share high-level impressions on flow, engagement, and how the story lands overall at its current stage. If that works for you, feel free to let me know how you’d prefer to share the manuscript and what kind of reactions you’d find most useful. iyemendator@gmail.com
