Flashman in the Great Game. I gave it 5 stars for its historical accuracy, humour, and just generally because I adore the series.
If It Makes You Happy. 🧡 Reading it felt like watching a ‘90s romcom and so I had to give it 5 stars.
The last book was called reluctant hero. It was well written but not one i would have picked on my own. I joined a reading group and it was in my queue. I had to give it 5 stars.
The last fantasy book I read was A Year of Bloodied Thorns— magic academy. 4 stars.Something has been holding me back from reading fantasy books lately—they're too long!
My favorite fantasy books this year were Shadow and Bone trilogy, Six of Crows duology, and The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo.
And my favorite indie fantasy was Of Mountains And Seas by Emily Renk Hawthorne.
What does too long look like to you?As an author, i am a little surprised at how fast you can blow by 100,000 words. But that is considered long by some standards. Most books ive read are n paperback were 500 pages or so. 100k gets you about 250-300 pages.
Do you wish the books were closer to 200 pages?
I enjoy staying around the 100k word mark/300 pages-ish line. If you have more, I feel it makes the thing feel like it's dragging on with prose that could have been cut out, side information that isn't necessarily relevant, or various other bits that should have been edited out.If it's really that important to have all those things, split the book into two and add more to fill up the rest. I just feel the cadence of the text is ruined by being too long.
Of course, the length of the book is not the most important thing; a well-written book with a good story can afford to be long. But in general, I prefer books between 200 and 350 pages long. If there are more than 500 pages, I feel intimidated :)
As a writer, I am also not too wordy. My stories don't have much filling; I have a different problem: too many plot lines and characters in one book. I myself remember everything that happens to them, but my readers are sometimes confused.
I've finished Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik. My review here
