Lol irk. I had to remind myself throughout the book that Emma is only two. I work in Pre-K and I'd say Emma behaves more like a 5-year-old.
I was personally offended that 60 year old Vera is repeatedly referred to as an 'old' woman. Maybe 'older' or 'mature' would be more appropriate.
Completely agree with your review. I’m about halfway through and want to give up. I was hoping to find a review with spoilers.
Yes! I was convinced the author had never met a child or anyone over 50 (Turns out she has two children). She really didn’t capture either demographic with any accuracy.
I was wondering if the author was 16 based on her fictional description of a 60 year old! Seriously? Orthopedic shoes, creaking bones, walking stick??? I agree with others that she is writing about an 80 year old. I put the book down. Very offensive to me.
I hate when that happens when you have to finish the book for book club! I had to do the same thing in January for my book club. I put this one down after the description of the 60 year old. What a joke
100% agree. Vera wakes at 4 AM and walks miles a day, yet she is old and frail? Makes no sense. That set the tone and got in the way of the rest of the book for me.
"Vera wakes at 4 AM and walks miles a day, yet she is old and frail?"
I see your point, but I have an uncle who is old and very frail yet still insists on walking miles a day or most days. He stops to rest a lot. Lol. Also, he's much older than 60!
Agree 100% with the ageist description of 60-year-old active, capable woman as diminished. The author seems to have no clue of the vitality of most women over sixty. Very offensive. Also had to finish this for book club otherwise would have gone straight back to the library early on.
Oh my gosh yes! I came here to say these two things! In what year are we that a 60 year old is an elderly woman??? And I'm guessing the author does not have much experience with kids because the two year old spoke like a 5 year old!
Glad I am not the only one who thought that Emma talks like she’s already in school. I skipped a lot of pages just to know who killed Marshall.
I'm a pediatric speech therapist and Emma is speaking more on the level of a 4-6 year old. Even if she were hyperverbal she would not be communicating at this level and it is so hard for me to experience cognitive dissonance with this while reading. I think the only reason Emma is supposed to be 2 is so she doesn't have memories of Marshall and so that Julia can continue breastfeeding her. This alone will knock stars off of my final review :(
Yes...I came here with just the same gripe. A 60 year old is not an old lady by any means. When does the decrepitude set in at 45? At 55? I am 67 and the furthest thing from a little old lady. This book is agist and while I am enjoying the writing and plot, I am having a tough time with the portrayal of Vera. Look at the art on the cover! She looks 85!
In the second book, Vera says that she wants people to think of her as a helpless old woman and that she wants people to think she's old so they respect her! Like a cultural thing. So yes, the author writes Vera to exaggerate her own elderliness on purpose- one of her many quirks
