Let's Talk About What's Next for Our Group! > Likes and Comments
Just a word of advice if you decide to have a Discord for the group: because it’s designed to be more instant/fast paced than this forum, good and consistent moderation is very important. Preferably with a majority of people who have moderated before — it’s not for everyone. I’ve moderated on a website with a forum and blogs section (user submitted blogs) and it got pretty stressful at times since I was an unpaid volunteer. Most mods are lol. And there’s the risk of power modding too. One person cannot mod a Discord for this group. I don’t even think 3 people could if the Discord ends up being really active. Also, drama and “clique”y hive mind behavior may likely arise between those who keep up with the Discord and this group vs. only this group. Of course, not everyone likes or wants to use Discord.
I’ve been on my fair share of good and not-so-good moderated Discords and it can be good as long as there isn’t that divisiveness of (for example) “this ABC info was on the Discord; didn’t you read it? Go to the Discord” when whatever ABC info could’ve been posted in this group too.
I think and Instagram or even a Facebook page would be nice! I’m in a couple Facebook groups for some online communities and there is a lot of really good discourse that happens there. It fosters community better than ig but isn’t as intensive as discord.
I️ would absolutely love an instagram page because that’s the social media I️ mainly use but I’d be willing to learn how to use discord.
I agree with what Ri said, it's gonna need a decent amount of moderators if the server is anywhere near the size of this group. I've run my own book server for 2+ years & with how active it was, I needed around 7-10 mods even for 200-ish people. Even the most active members sent hundreds of messages a day, so that alone was a lot to keep track of. Not to mention you need people to create & manage events (read-a-thons, buddy reads), and keep up with other fun stuff like posting daily questions, etc. But overall, a server would be the best option as long as it's managed correctly.
The discord idea sounds really fun! I think it would be a great way to chat more casually and connect with everyone :)
Discord is a very nice option for a larger group of people and is perfect for a book club! I am a member of a local book club and we have a Discord server and it’s great to keep up with all the different topics we discuss 🥰
I don’t have discord but I would love an Instagram or even telegram groupchat!!!! So we can recommend books and talk about them and even maybe do buddy readings!
So I don’t have insta, discord, or TikTok. But I would love to have monthly book picks and some fun stuff like that!
A discord or Instagram would be really cool! I like the idea of being able to have real time conversations and being able to make new book friends, along with the idea of themed reads things like that. Definitely more community based and friend building, for sure!
A discord would be BEAUTIFUL!!! if that’s what we all decide on, please send out a link/reminder to all of us individually so I don’t miss it!!
instagram or tiktok would be nice, i think most people probably already have an account. but i’ll be okay with joining discord too
An instagram page would be nice and fun. I’m more active on there. Also I’m interested in doing a monthly book or theme would be something and discuss the book picked for that theme.
Instagram would be nice! I think it’s the social media that we majorly have so it would be fun to make some book friends and interact over there 🥰!!

I just want to take a minute to say a huge thank you! We recently passed 100,000 members, which is absolutely wild to me. I'm so excited and grateful to everyone who's joined, shared recommendations, started conversations, or just hung out quietly and read along. <3
I have slowly been working on reorganizing the discussion threads (there are over 14,000, so it's definitely a process), but I want to make sure this group keeps growing in a way that's fun, welcoming, and easy to connect in.
I want to mention that I absolutely love using Goodreads, it's where this whole community started, and I plan to keep it organized and active as always. That said, Goodreads is amazing for sharing what we're reading, but it can be tricky to make friends and really get to know each other. I've been thinking about maybe expanding our space a bit, like starting a Discord, Instagram page, TikTok, etc. (I'm open to ideas!), where we could do more interactive stuff like book chats, themed reads, etc.
I'd love your thoughts:
-Would you be interested in following or joining something like that?
-What kind of content would you want to see (here or on another platform)
-Is there anything you wish Goodreads made easier that we could build on another platform?
-Would monthly book picks or themed reading events be something you'd want to join in on?
-Any suggestions for how to keep things welcoming and inclusive as we keep growing?
I'm also sending out a private message so you can respond there if it's easier. Feel free to comment here or message me directly with your ideas!
Thank you again for being a part of this community. I can't wait to hear your thoughts and see where we can take it next!
