Richard Alex Jenkins Hello, my name is Alex.

I am the group coordinator and love all the technical and organisational aspects, especially arranging monthly group reads, requesting your suggestions and putting together polls to decide our books, as well as dabbling with visual aids like mastheads and logos.

I read about five books a month on average and particularly enjoy horror, dystopia and science fiction.

Cheers,
Alex

HorrorBabe911 Hi my name is Suhailee. I love all things horror and recently got into romance and fantasy. I normally read 4-10 books a month and love to watch movies (horror/ thriller films ofc☺️) my fav horror author are Judith sonnet and Stephen king <—- the king of horror ofc🩷

Richard Alex Jenkins Welcome, HorrorBabe/Suhailee.

So glad to see you made it!

Kathy Hi, I'm Kathy. I read all genres but I really love horror, thriller and mysteries. I'm a big fan of audiobooks; I listen while walking and read about 15-20 books per month. I read a few books at one time to avoid a reading slump; usually something I'm reading fits the mood.

Hi, Kathy.

You're more than welcome here and thanks for taking the leap.
That's a lot of books; you're lucky to have the time, health and joie de vivre!

Argent Talonn Hi! Argent, here. Thanks for the invite. Horror is my favorite genre, but I read practically everything. King, Koontz, Cross, but love the close association with science fiction. Alien, Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, I'm here for all of it. Hello, Suhailee. Hello, Alex. So sorry for your issues with the other group, but much thanks for your effort. Hopefully a better situation here.

Hi, Argent.

Me too, I love exploring space and the other side, plus thrillers, crime, mystery and all that stuff, and historical fiction, war, classics, even a bit of romance when done well.

No problems with the other group other than Amazon restricting group ownership with their silly policies. Chels is with us and she is welcome to accept my offer to co-moderate.

Cheers,
Alex

message 9: by Alexis (new)

Alexis Zhou Hi all,
I’m Alexis! I mostly enjoy horror and thrillers in general, but have also recently gotten into the historical horror sub-genre. Some of my favorite authors are Stephen Graham Jones, Jennifer McMahon, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and Paul Tremblay (among others). I’m trying to be more active on Goodreads these days, as I’m always looking for new book suggestions!

message 10: by Nick (new)

Nick Vallina (MisterGhostReads) Hi all. Nick here!

I'm a queer 30-something bookstagrammer with no life. I read basically everything but my two main vices are ghosty haunted house horror and gay hockey romances? I like boys kissing and also boys being murdered by ghosts.

I have layers...like an onion. Or an ogre.

I read a lot of morbid non-fiction usually surrounding thanatology, the death industry, the unexplained (cryptozoology, or ghosts, or unsolved mysteries etc.), or true crime. I read a lot of horror and queer books (romance or otherwise) and really do enjoy certain subsects of the science fiction genre (I really love a good space opera!)

I'm usually down to read almost anything except I don't much care for romantasy? I love fantasy but if the main point of the book is having sex with a fae prince, I'm definitely uninterested. I'd much prefer cute Vin falling in love with Eland while being a badass in The Final Empire.

Some of my favorite books ever include:
Boyfriend Material
The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi
The Collected Regrets of Clover
Ghostland

And I'm currently reading Incidents Around the House which is the first book I've read in AGES that has me genuinely spooked at points!

I'm not overly sociable but will endeavor to participate more in this group rather than just reading along with the monthly picks by myself, quietly sitting with my dog while thinking about decomposition or death industry reform.

xoxo,
Gossip Girl

message 11: by Balthazarinblue (new)

Balthazarinblue Hi, I'm Claire! I think I've been in every iteration of this group, haha. Thank you, Alex, for keeping it going when everyone else had to step down.

I love horror and thrillers. Reading with the group has nudged me in the direction of some books I might not have picked up otherwise - which I appreciate very much! Plus I'm addicted to voting in online polls. I love a Book of the Month battle lmao.

message 12: by Phil (new)

Phil Hello All! I am Phil, and love both horror and science fiction, and have been reading both for years. I started really reading in the 70s and cut my teeth on both genres, with some liberal dabs of fantasy as well. Cheers!

message 13: by Olga (new)

Olga Yolgina Hi everyone!
I’m Olga. I read mostly sci-fi and fantasy (so this group might be more down my alley than the purely horror one), I’m also interested in classics - I’m currently on a journey through English literature with The Norton Anthology and a course on YouTube (almost finished The Canterbury Tales).

My whole life I kept as far away from horror as I could, but was surprised to see that some of my reads this year were considered light horror, so maybe I’ll join some light horror reads as well.

message 14: by Richard Alex (last edited Aug 01, 2024 05:50PM) (new)

Richard Alex Jenkins Thanks, Alexis, Nick, Claire (Balthazar), Bryna, Phil and Olga, for posting a bit about yourself and sticking with the group and all of its iterations.

I appreciate all of you.

It's been a pretty smooth transition and please continue reading our two books of the month, They Thirst by Robert McCammon, and Duma Key by maestro Stephen King.

Next month (September) we'll be going with the two suggestions from Horror Haven and after that, who knows?

Take care out there and thank you all again for joining!

Susan Kay - on semihiatus Thanks for the invite to follow here. I read a little of everything, but horror will always be my favorite. I couldn't find a copy of They Thirst, and I can't read Duma Key because I'm in the middle of the Dark Tower pre-reads, and my head might explode! (I'm also in the middle of 9 other books, but let's not talk about that.)

Hi, Susan, thanks for following on from the old group.
We're alive and kicking!

You make your bed, you lie in it. You want both your cake and to eat it. So many choices. Not a bad life, is it?

message 17: by LavB (new)

LavB Hi I'm Avrium (Aye-Ver-Ree-Um),

I am happy to be apart of the group! I read various different genres on any given day but my favorite by far is horror whether a book or movie. I particularly like anything that is folklore such as skin walkers, the wendigo, etc. also a big fan of gore and just that feeling of losing your mind.

I can't wait to see what we will all be reading together! Nice to meet everyone.

Sincerely,
Avrium

Tyler Gray Hello! I read a little bit of everything. Horror, fantasy and nonfiction being my favorites but I also read sci-fi, contemporary, thriller, mystery, etc. Horror was my first foray into reading and all I read growing up though. Started with Goosebumps as a kid in the 90s. Frankenstein is now my favorite book. I'm also an aspiring author and working on stuff right now.

Glad to be here :)

Hi, Tyler!
Frankenstein is unique, isn't it?
How can you feel empathy for a monster made out of dead people looking to rip off your arms and legs, and yet you do.

Welcome to the group!

Danielle Noelle Hi! I’m Danielle and a lover of psychological thrillers and anything sexy/romance and horror. I took a little hiatus from reading but have been dedicated to reading again. Always open for recommendations and new friends! Read on 🤘🏼 !

message 21: by Ruby (last edited Aug 01, 2024 12:14PM) (new)

Ruby Hi all!

My top read genres are:
Horror
Dystopian SciFi
Historical Fiction
Mythical/ Fairytale Retellings
Romance Fantasy

So it all depends on my mood, I am very active on Goodreads, I average 20 books a month since I have a job that allows me a lot of freedom to listen to audiobooks during the day, and kindle/physical books at night.

I love seeing and comparing what others are reading, recommendations are also more than welcome : )

Brittni | semi-hiatus Hello hello, I guess I'm migrating here from Horror Haven? Haha!

I'm Brittni! I pretty much only read horror and sometimes dip my toes into the horror-adjacent and spookier bits of other genres, such as Sci-Fi. I have a silly horror review blog and have been greatly enjoying chatting with people about books in these groups! :)

Maybe it's my inner alpha male coming to the surface, probably, but I can't understand why anyone would read 'gay hockey romances' in a million years? 😂 You say it in the plural, like it's an entire subgenre? I've heard of M M Romance, but God, I am so out of touch!

Welcome, Nick, glad to have you here...

You're more than welcome, Michael, thanks for popping over from the other side and getting lost in the shadow realm.

Hopefully this group will expand on pure horror, the wide genre it already is, into many related topics. We read Dark Matter during March and that was perfect for this type of group.

message 38: by Qaz (new)

Qaz Hey all! Lover of horror and everything creepy. 💀

I read around 5-10 books a month in a variety of genres that fit under the speculative fiction umbrella. I don't tend to post often because I'm fairly shy but I do love to lurk and check out what everyone is saying about our monthly reads. Feel free to add me as a friend because I love seeing what others are reading and reviewing.

Thanks for the invite, Alex. You were keeping up with Horror Haven wonderfully, I expect this new group to be just as awesome. Thanks for all you do and to all the moderators who help keep this place safe and fun. 🖤

message 42: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa Guidry Hello all! I'm Alyssa. I've been obsessed with horror and sci-fi books and movies since I was a kid. I blame Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and Goosebumps. I discovered my love for sci-fi with Anne McCaffrey's Dragon Riders of Pern series. I'll read almost anything if the plot is interesting enough but horror is my usual go to. Since discovering audiobooks, I've been devouring books left and right. I listen to them everywhere. I look forward to seeing all of the suggestions from everyone for new books to check out!

message 43: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey Caston Hello Everyone!

Thank you for the invite, Alex. Much appreciated.

I'm Jeffrey. I read, write horror, and drink beer. The order and priority thereof shifts depending on mood and time. I love King and Rice, but I also really like indie sci-fi, fantasy, and horror. I've tried a bunch of different genres too. Some stuff that might surprise you. I see familiar names and new names (to me) that's all awesome. I look forward to interacting with you all.

I also read all genres, but mainly horror, fantasy, and “weird girl” lit. message 50: by Netanella (new)

Netanella Hey I'm Net. I came over yesterday with the moving van convoy of readers, but didn't post as I was on my mobile. Like most here, I love reading, especially horror and science fiction, but I'll throw just about any fiction genre in there - just about. It has to be well written. There are a few other criteria, but those can be loosey-goosey depending upon the mood, etc.

I'm glad to be here, and I'm really glad the book selections for the next few months are the same. Made that choice a lot easier!
