J. Colford My latest book, TYRIA, is available. On Friday, August 21, at 8:a.m., it will go on sale for .99. It will incrementally increase in price over the weekend, and by Sunday at 8:00 p,m., it will be back to 2.99.

In the ancient and diverse city of Tyria, capitol city of Athesia, many religions and cults have established a place among the people, but one looms to threaten them all.
From the onset of their arrival in Tyria, the Vasi citizens and soldiers are challenged by what seems to be an overt prejudice against them. Someone high up in the rule of the realm has apparently arranged for the Vasi soldiers and tradesman to be assigned to less than habitable housing accommodations. Though prepared for less than preferential treatment, they come to the realization they will have much to overcome to find a place in this city.
When spies from an unknown realm are discovered by Hawke and Bret, and Syporian children begin to disappear, a hunt by the Athesian military for the hiding place of the spies and their leader changes the perception the Athesians have had of the Vasi soldiers and citizens. Hawke and Captain Rush Soren, already assigned to seek information about the mystery realm that provided ships to Louis of Calara, embark on a joint mission to Little Syporia, the most dangerous section of the city of Tyria, and return with information that shocks the Athesian military leaders, and unites the Athesian, Syporian, Mederan and Vasi in a quest to prevent an ancient and bloodtrhirsty evil expelled a thousand years ago from regaining a foothold in Athesia.

O.F. Cieri Hey, I'm a relatively new member and my book, Lord of Thundertown, is currently on sale through the publisher's website. It's a deconstruction on urban fantasy tropes such as Lordly courts and semi-human fairies.

The story follows three friends trying to solve a mystery, and along the way they get beaten to a complete pulp. I hope you like it!

Martin Talks Hello all. I recently published Blinky's Law, a comic and thrilling science fiction adventure into the future.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/191...

It's a book for anyone who is interested in how our relationship with technology might play out. From devices that chat with you, to self driving cars, to virtual reality, to cryogenics and especially robots, the main character, Hiu, tries to understand what is a healthy relationship with technology. It doesn't start well for him as his fridge has just filed for a divorce.

I find possible futures as equally funny as scary, so this isn't a grim apocalyptic tale, but rather one that says there's hope with a smile on its face.

Joseph Wycoff Arcane Cage: Being a Historical Narrative of Fantastic Events During the Decline and Fall of the Provenance

"The great historical sweep of the entire book, and the account of Siddrah's quest for the talismanic Archon, are richly imagined and lavishly depicted. There is a classical historian's tone to this fantasy epic, with echoes of Tolkien and other fantasy greats. The singular construction of an imaginary world, culture and even a literary heritage is impressive...If George R.R. Martin and Herodotus held a writing seminar, this dense account of an imaginary land might be the result." Publishers Weekly, BookLife Prize 2019 [Critic's Report]

During the pandemic, I read my first fantasy novel, Arcane Cage, to my mom as a way to stay in touch (visiting across state lines between our states was out of the question). I uploaded the readings to YouTube, so the audio/video book (#audiobook) is available for free to all.

The "history" begins with the Preface:

Reading to Mom, Episode 1: The Preface (https://youtu.be/0UrxJJc4gXE)

In the (faux) historical narrative, my partner (who has acted in the past) agreed to read the lines attributed to the main character. The "fantasy novel" begins with her voice (in key passages) with the introduction of the "historical events" she witnessed in Chapter 4:

Reading to Mom, Episode 5: https://youtu.be/YT_C2_0CGEA

We improved as we went along (I would like to think!). Check out some other episodes if these two are poor samples. My Mom suggests that Episode 18 (which definitely entails spoilers) should be Episode 1 (so I object), but every story needs an alt reading:

Reading to Mom, Episode 18: https://youtu.be/4OWsq6wWVnY

The full reading takes about 17 hours. Each episode begins with a running dispute between the publisher and the author about the fantastical and historical aspects of the work (4-5 minutes) meant to give some background on the upcoming chapter reading.

E.D. Lazure My fantasy novel, Of fractured lands and sundered dreams, will be free to download from September 25th to the 29th! Give it a try if you want a plot-driven story with rich world-building (multiple POVs, locations and cultures), tragic characters and mature themes.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08...

The Fimarans’ attempt to overthrow their god backfires. As ghastly creatures begin to fill Fimara and the world’s oceans, Fimarans have no choice but to invade neighboring Odi-Lodo, home of the Dwarfs. Centuries later, facing a revolt by the enslaved Dwarfs, Faija Soothing Wind must find the will to survive and to embrace motherhood. On the run with her daughter, she meets an ailing slave claiming a divine mission which would lead north to Fimara, the accursed land of her ancestors.

Beyond the horizon, the nations of Oria, discovering that monsters no longer haunt the seas, race to send ships over uncharted waters. Survivors of a shipwrecked expedition, historian Tellorym Lewyn, Sister Mikala, and Raysho of Alyth land on Dolixa, where the ruling shamans refuse to embrace the Dreamer’s prophecy regarding the arrival of seafarers and the impending transformation of both Dolixa and Fimara.

The first book in the Almodel’s Awakening trilogy, Of fractured lands and sundered dreams is inspired by classic tragedies where proud characters must pay a steep price for their hubris while others choose to embrace sacrifice in an uncertain pursuit of salvation. With mature themes and limited fantasy elements, the story revolves around deeply flawed characters facing unimaginable circumstances and unforgiving decisions.

Courtney Hunter Hi there - I'm Courtney and I am doing a Goodreads giveaway on my debut Science Fiction Novel, Sentience. It's due out on 10/30/20, but if you want to get your hands on it even sooner, keep scrolling. In the mean time, let me tell you a bit about it.

Sentience follows twenty-four individuals as they travel through a contained natural preserve to participate in a Turing Test conducted by a tech corporation willing to do anything for monetary gain. Robots, sex, lies, adventure, and chaos. Who can you trust when you can’t trust yourself? And what truly defines humanity and consciousness?

To keep it really simple, I like to describe Sentience by saying that it’s like Michael Crichton’s Westworld meets The Hunger Games for grown-ups.

https://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/sh...

Keep reading for the full synopsis of the novel.

Running from a violent past, Leo Knox desperately decides to participate in a scientific experiment conducted by the infamous and greedy tech-giant, AlgorithmOS. Soon, Leo learns that she has agreed to take part in a Turing Test, a test that measures the ability of artificial intelligence to blend in among humanity, but what she doesn’t know is that the test set to take place is unlike any other of its kind.

Leo enters Eden, the contained preserve where the test will occur, with twenty-three others. While everyone appears to be human, four of the individuals are an indistinguishably advanced form of humanoid AI. The task is simple: identify the AI while trying to survive. The twist? The four AI are completely unaware of their nature, causing every participant to question what they know as reality.

The group embarks on a journey within the preserve, rigged with obstacles devised by the controllers of the experiment to elicit human response and emotion. Quickly, madness ensues and divides form, partnering Leo up with Avery Ford, a Marine who wears his demons on his sleeve. Romance falls together for the two as the world around them falls apart, revealing the lengths people will go to protect those they love, to achieve monetary gain, or simply to survive.

Back at AlgorithmOS, the story unfolds on the screens of Nathan Aimes, a scientist responsible for monitoring the experiment’s surveillance cameras. Nathan studies the humans involved as they wrestle with where they stand on the polarizing issue of AI and its applications. He watches the AI unknowingly fight to prove their humanity just to leave the experiment unscathed. All the while, Nathan is intimately aware of his company’s plans to weaponize or commodify the AI should they pass the test, and he must reconcile this with the chaos that plays out before him.

Tomas Grizzly Hello there,
some of you may remember I was asking about writing-related stuff a while ago... it's actually a couple of years, back in 2016 or 2017, I believe.
And now, this weird year, my debut is complete! Eternal Defenders is released today in Kindle Edition with a launch price of $2.99/€2.69 that will last for... 2-3 weeks. Or you can read it free if you have Kindle Unlimited. (Paperback is coming in early 2021)

It's a sword-and-sorcery fantasy with major coming-of-age elements (exploring the differences between father and son, as well as the son's struggle with the expectations he faces, as well as his first love) and Shadow vs. Light theme; a story about a group of elite heroes fighting endless hordes of demons, any anything else that threatens their land, from without or within.

Description: (view spoiler)
Note: this is an adult book, recommended 18+ because of a few explicitely intimate scenes.
Amazon US link (Of course, available on any other local version of Amazon).
And a custom-made glossary for 100 characters and places using Kindle X-ray is there to remind you should you forget who is who - a handy hint just below your fingertip.

And should you have any questions, private or public, feel free to ask me.

Douglas Phillips A few observations:
1. As of today, this page has 402 posts and 745 views, less than 2 views per post (low for any community board).
2. Virtually all of these posts are for self-published books, and like any collection probably range from abysmal reads to really good stories.
3. None of the books selected in 2020 for the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Club derived from self published authors. None. Zip. Nada. All selected books were from publishing houses, mostly Tor.

So, honestly, is there any reason for self-published authors to post here? Seems like a missed opportunity for both authors and readers. In my experience, some of the *best* stories out there are self-published, but they're harder to find. Goodreads could be a mechanism to change that, but it hasn't happened yet.

Unfortunately, there are way too many people who think that either trad-published means quality, that self-published means lack of quality, or both.
My explanation would be that the people who read self-pub books are elsewhere. Whether this means just a different group, or not on Goodreads at all, is another question. But the latter is a good possibility because some of the best self-pub authors have only a passive presence on GR.
It feels like GR is a place for the major publishers to dump their money into thinks like the genre and new release spotlights that probably won't ever mention a self-pub book (this is the part where GR could've helped a change but doesn't).

I did not expect much from posting here. But since it takes just a few minutes, there wasn't much to lose by trying.

message 385: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Deans Yet another reason why I always say to authors (especially new and/or self-pubbed authors) don't try to use GR as an advertising/selling forum. It won't work (almost certainly).

On the other hand, if you come to GR as a reader first and an author second, you might just make some good connections and genuinely interest others in your work simply because they've become interested in you by virtue of your engagement.

This group is not really meant for self promotion. This thread is nice for those of us who do like self published books and want to support people we interact with in the group. I personally have purchased a book and added several to my Kindle Unlimited TBR based on this thread.

As far as self published books in this group, I know we have at least read one this year as a group read, and several others have been nominated. One of the big things we run into with this group is availability for people all over the world, so it's a bit harder to suggest self published books when they are less likely to be widely available to people in our group that want to discuss.

John Japuntich If you're looking for an epic sci-fi mystery, welcome to Atropos. On sale for $0.99 until 11/8/20.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08...

The aftermath of the virus left the world in shambles. The recovery lasted centuries. The plague was so transformative, gifting humanity immortality while simultaneously causing infertility, that it became known as simply the Event.

John Fitzpatrick, retired FBI agent, is consumed with exposing what, or who is behind the Event. As John looks for answers, he must navigate a new world created by the Event, decades of world-wide depression and war, messianic cult leaders, and a meddlesome AI.

Civilization survives the Event depression by uniting under one government. The Federation of Nations is led by a charismatic economist who restructures the world economy to focus on one goal; interstellar colonization. Centuries later, John’s obsession with the cause of the Event leads him to discover the forces behind the Event may threaten the launch of humanity’s first interstellar ship; Atropos and plunge the world back into darkness.

T.B. Wayne I am running my Amazon KDP Select special today through Tuesday. Get the Ebook entirely, unilaterally, unequivocally...FREE. I'd love to know your thoughts, as it's my first book. I am told the fight scenes were my strength and that "my voice" and storytelling got better as each chapter progressed.

It takes place 1000 years after the fall of mankind in what remains of the Pacific Northwest. An Order has arisen to protect mankind from the mutated creatures and what used to be men. They roam the land offering their services, rather like Marshals used to in the old west. They are called Triads. They ensure the laws are followed and man has protection against the dark. Until information comes to light that the entire foundation of the Order may be a lie and it may be corrupt at its very center.

This is a very dark and graphic story about the evil that humans do to one another. it is about the fall of a hero into villainy and the steps he takes on that road. It is certainly not for the faint of heart. Word of warning

A Foreshadowing of Darkness

V.M. Sang I am excited to announce that the first book in my Wolves of Vimar series is now available in audio. It's called The Wolf Pack.
Carthinal is a half-elf apprentice mage who wants nothing more than to pass the tests that will allow him to become a full mage. Once he has passed the tests, he is given a quest to find a long-lost artifact. A prophecy has said it will be needed at this time.
He is joined by others and the disparate group set off on the quest. They meet with life-changing events on their journey, and come close to death on several occasions. None of them returns unchanged.
If you would like to read or listen to this book, you can get it on Amazon by following this link. http://myBook.to/TheWolfPack
It is currently in the top 50 of Young Adult Interactive Fiction, although I don't consider it to be YA. It wasn't written as such.

Time Shattered

In the near future, we discover that climate change will soon mean the end of humanity. For generations we took little action, but now we are running out of time. Our final hope for survival is time travel, but the attempt shatters the space-time continuum.

The team must travel the world of the past with Romans, Nazis and Native Americans, through the present and into the future, where humanity is reduced to a small number of survivors. On their journey they will face great dangers, but the stakes couldn’t be higher.

The Unremarkable Man

Brandon is just a regular young man living an average life – until a chance encounter with a gifted woman changes everything. Alicia gives him the gift, which saves his life and grants him superhuman abilities, but it comes at a price. The gifted are hunted and have been for generations.

Safe in a sanctuary, Brandon and Alicia become close. But the moment they venture out, they cross paths with the soldiers who hunt the gifted. The encounter prompts Brandon to learn more about the origins of the gift and the extent of his new abilities. Undercover, he infiltrates the soldiers’ group, and finds allies who will support him.

Now, Brandon is no longer a regular man drifting through life. He has a purpose: to bring an end to the centuries-old conflict between the gifted and the soldiers, and take the gifted out of the shadows and reveal them to the world.

The New World & Beyond

After Brandon’s television interview, the gifted are no longer in the shadows. Now each country must decide how to react to their existence.

The soldiers return with Paul as their new leader, determined to prove that the gifted are more than they’ll admit and eliminate them as a threat.

Before the rest of the world can process all the events, a new revelation is thrust upon them: humankind is not the only intelligent race in this part of the galaxy.

Aliens have come to Earth, and they will be integral to shaping the future. That’s if Earth even has a future…

Stephan Rogers I'm new here. I've only read 16 books from the tbr list. Clearly, this group has taste. I wouldn't post this here if it wasn't well-written.

TWIN TORN is a paranormal urban fantasy novel, set in New York City in the year 2023. It's got vampires in it. Dragons. Magic. Werewolves. Alternate worlds. But it's not Lord of the Rings. No one goes up to anyone and says "You have been chosen!" because I don't think that would ever happen. I think things come up and sometimes it's up to you, whether you want it to be or not.

The blurb: There's a rumor floating around that we read the Mayan calendar wrong. That the end of the world is really going to happen on October 13, 2023, which agrees with the properly translated Cairo calendar. It's not a rumor.
The problem with having the entire world hanging in the balance, is: There's nowhere to run. Wrong place? Wrong time? It doesn't matter. It's all wrong. All of it. The only way to know you've won, is if everything is still in one piece at the end of the countdown.
The problem with having an identity crisis is: One minute, you're playing at hero. The next, you're regaining consciousness, covered in blood; with dead bodies strewn all over the place, wondering what just happened.
All Ash ever wanted was to be normal, just like everyone else. To fit in. Now everything's a mess. Maybe he should have just slept in.

"Vibrant characters...dark but entertaining...A hearty, riveting vampire tale with a wonderfully motley cast." -Kirkus Reviews

"The adventure is imaginative...an action-packed fantasy novel for readers of any age...boasts an impressive cast of characters..." --Indies Today

Kley Hi. I would like to introduce my novel A LIFETIME WAITING FOR ETERNITY.

This is complex fiction novel where science, religion and history blend to create a surreal story with elements of realism. Like the experience of enjoying a good wine, this novel will take you on a “tasting” journey into the very heart of trying to imagine a world beyond our reality:

*The cover (Appearance): minimalist design intended to communicate without words.
*The setting (Aroma): the novel setting based on Ely's scientific multidimensional afterlife world.
*The plot (Taste): the struggle of a couple in love to prevent Armageddon.
*The message (Aftertaste): maybe, it makes wonder about and rethink the common beliefs about the afterlife.

The blurb and other information about the novel are found here:

A Lifetime Waiting For Eternity

I hope you enjoy (with a glass of wine!) reading the book as much as I enjoyed writing it. Welcome onboard.

The techno parts are very accurate yet explained in easy to follow manner. Check out the reviews! https://www.amazon.com/SuperCOIL-Robe...

When a Top Secret newly designed stealth bomber disappears off the Florida coast following an aerial refueling accident and is presumed destroyed, Lieutenant Ian Ryson is appointed by the President to investigate possible foul play. Ryson, an ex-military aviator with expertise in stealth technology, sets out to inspect the secretive airbase where the aircraft was furtively developed. He is, however, soon immersed in a web of deception, treachery and murder instigated by Colonel Gorik, the ruthless base commander intent on thwarting the uncovering of his sinister past connected to the bomber's fate.

Before long, Ryson learns that the radar-invisible craft, code-named SuperCOIL, carries the ultimate weapon: an airborne, chemically fueled "COIL" laser powerful enough to shoot down scores of missiles in mid-flight, thus revolutionizing air combat. As events unfold, Ryson discovers the SuperCOIL might not have been destroyed as believed but commandeered by its maniacal test pilot turned mercenary. A race is now on against time to uncover, at all costs, the true motives behind the theft, locate and confront a matchless aviator commanding the most formidable air-combat craft ever devised, and prevent the priceless secrets of the United States' greatest super-weapon from falling into the wrong hands.

Courtney Hunter My debut science fiction novel Sentience is on sale today for Black Friday. Fill your pal's stockings with some genre-bending science fiction with the $7.99 paperback, or just treat yourself to the Kindle ebook at $.99. Eitherway, Sentience won't disappoint!

You can snag your copy here:
https://amzn.to/2TAmB8H

Holding a 4.6 Rating on Amazon and a 4.39 on Goodreads, Sentience has been described as "a haunting, twisted and edgy amalgam of Westworld, The Hunger Games, I,Robot, and Lord of the Flies."

Sentience follows twenty-four individuals as they travel through a contained natural preserve to participate in a Turing Test conducted by a tech corporation willing to do anything for monetary gain. Throughout their journey, they face obstacles designed by the experiment controllers to elicit human response and emotion. However, four of these individuals are not human. Romance falls together as the world around them falls apart, revealing the lengths people will go to protect those they love, achieve success, or simply survive. While the humans involved wrestle with where they stand on the polarizing issue of artificial intelligence and its applications, the AI in the experiment must prove their humanity to leave the experiment unscathed. The experience of those within the experiment is juxtaposed against those running it, some of whom struggle with the corporation's intentions for the AI that pass the Turing Test. All of this leaves readers wondering what truly defines humanity and consciousness.
