Your novel sounds clever and fun. It's YA right? Interestingly, I too have a skateboarding painter in my novel End Man, which will be published by Cursed Dragon Ship in October 2022. Mine is adult speculative fiction and the skateboarder is my main character, Raphael Winston Lennon. Raphael is 26 and works as an IT specialist for a company that collects online human remains. I'll check out your book.

Larry Hey Lee, looks like there is a billion books out there. And look at the post in this forum, it doesn't look like help... more like everyone just wants to shout out their own books.
Ok, I know there is a lot of grass roots marketing to be done. I am up to it... showing up at local bookstores, selling in craft shows... I have seen all that. There are a lot of online marketing people promising you the world... but who do you trust? I admit, I popped my book up on amazon mostly because I wanted to let it simmer while I finish the series. My hopes that when I am finished, I can dedicate time and resources to promoting the series as a whole. Even more than that I have gone through the whole start up marketing with a patent I am partial owner of... its not fun if your not into it. And I just want to keep writing... UGH!
What are your thoughts?

message 655: by Leon (new)

Leon Jane It takes a lot of effort to 'seen' amongst the 'billions'. Writing is the most enjoyable and easy part, however with the whole indie route, although gives you freedom, see's your passion turn into a business: editing, publishing, pricing, marketing etc.

Like you're doing now on Goodreads, you have to be engaging and contribute to forums and reviews. There are heaps of writers who just drop a promotion and leave.

Grit, determination, engagement and the willingness to learn and evolve will help you. Plus if you have a series with a unique story then readership should grow if you keep at it.

I am just a beginner as well, hoping one day to succeed. Good luck with your journey!

message 656: by Lee (new)

Lee McCall Hey Larry and Leon, looks like there's a lot of us in the same boat. :) I know the marketing/promotion is going to be a tough grind. I've been pursuing book bloggers and reviewers to try to get some visibility for my book, but reputable and professional bloggers most often have a huge stack of books in front of them already, so trying to persuade them to take time to read a self-published work by an unknown author is an uphill battle.
You're right that this is the hardest part of being a new writer. :) But it's a necessary part of the job, so I'm just trying to put my head down and get it done.

message 657: by Larry (new)

Larry Leon, Lee, and Larry LoL,
Thanks for responding guys. And good luck. I will keep an eye here and share anything that I find that works.

message 658: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Deans In the end, the only thing that "works" for an indie author is writing a truly fantastic book.

And sometimes, not even that is enough...

message 659: by Larry (last edited Apr 28, 2022 04:36AM) (new)

Larry I hear you, Adrian. The thing is, it is difficult to know where your book lies on that spectrum until people other than friends and family tell you that its fantastic. Another big UGH! I love em for supporting me, but I need outside confirmation :)
If I suck, that's fine too. Then I can move on to other endeavors

M.B. Reed I have just published on Amazon:
The Events of 1968 An Alternative History (Pentacle Papers, #2) by M.B. Reed
The Events of 1968: An Alternative History

https://mybook.to/events

On price promotion: only 99c / 99p until 14 May.

The second novel in the Pentacle Papers series of funny and thought-provoking techno-thrillers, set in the period 1968-75 in a world where Britain signed a peace treaty with Hitler in 1941. Should appeal to lovers of British humour, speculative fiction and Sixties nostalgia.

A prequel to The Hammond Conjecture (semi-finalist in the Self-Published Science Fiction Competition thespsfc.org)

The novel follows Thomas Hammond from shy, insecure and sexually confused schoolboy to a centred young man who has learned the difference between sex and love, and who is prepared to fight for whom, rather than what, he believes in.
Tommy doesn’t question his sheltered, repressed life until he meets Iona at the Sixth Form disco. She introduces him to a world of Left Bank intellectuals and left-wing philosophers. When King Edward VIII appoints a populist kleptocrat as PM they become politically active, organising a schoolkids’ trade union. But as democracy collapses and fascists and anarchists run wild, their relationship also hits the rocks. Iona is sucked into Maoist fervour while Tommy drifts into Sixties psychedelia.
Around them, a cast of journalists and spies, soldiers and activists - and an underground resistance movement - scheme, deceive and betray one another.
In August the political violence reaches its peak at a rally in Trafalgar Square. Does Iona survive? Can Tommy save her? Will she return to him? Does he really want her to?

Robin Kirk Thrilled to announce the cover reveal for the final book in The Bond Trilogy, The Mother's Wheel (up for preorder: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09...). This exciting young adult fantasy trilogy envisions a world where women are eliminating men--or breeding sons to fight. In The Bond, Dinitra learns that everything she’s been taught is a lie. The only things she can believe in are her mutant battle dog, 12, and Fir, the warrior-son she helps free and comes to love. The Hive Queen finds Fir fleeing his mother in a desperate quest for freedom. But will he end up killing his own brothers? The dangers they encounter include a beautiful Hive Queen who wants Fir for her own. Unless she finds a mate to strengthen her Hive, she'll be crushed by her murderous brother, whose alliance to men is a danger to humans and mutants alike. The Mother's Wheel reunites Dinitra, Fir, and the mutant Sil in their desperate attempt to save the Hive Queen, humans, and mutants and build a world without war. "There are battles, adventures, and struggles for power galore. But ultimately, The Mother's Wheel is a haunting, heartfelt meditation on love, loss, and what it means to belong to a family.” Emily Colin, New York Times bestselling author of The Memory Thief and award-winning author of Sword of the Seven Sins series

John Warner Hello everyone. I thought that some of you may be looking for a smart/unique sci-fi novel for the upcoming holiday this weekend, so I talked my co-author into doing our first Kindle CountDown Deal starting tomorrow. Hopefully you will find it enjoyable by the pool or beach.

Harbinger in the Night by John Warner

https://www.amazon.com/Harbinger-Nigh...

In the near future a new space race is in full swing to be the first to colonize Mars. The United States and allied European governments working alongside private industry are competing against the RSAC, a new Russian-Chinese alliance, to build working spacecraft to make the long journey.

In preparations for the mission, an engineering team from an aerospace/tech conglomerate is building out the interplanetary communications network, when a mysterious object emerges from the depths of interstellar space. As the nations of Earth scramble to investigate this strange comet, they must overcome plots from within and the machinations of a malignant AI in order to be the first to meet the menace, or the promise, that the intruder foretells.

Major Koda Cheveyo, a special operations soldier is tasked to lead his team to face this possible threat while Michael Thompson, a quantum computer engineer, works with his homebrewed AI to counter the emerging peril from within. Together with the help of a billionaire tech tycoon and a government security agent, their mission could reshape the future of humanity.

Have a great weekend!
John

Jessica Mae Stover Well, it’s been a minute. I tend to read the newsletters and lurk in spurts until I have a top-level announcement: the last time I wrote one of these messages to fellow SFF readers on GR was years ago in the beforetimes when Astral Fall dropped.

So much has changed since then.

Accordingly, below are the intro links to my new book, coming 06.06.22 (Monday!), IMPRESS OF THE SEVENTH SURGE. Everything you'd want to know is on the GR link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6... ☣️

New scifi novel!

Here’s a public Twitter link that has everything to do with ‘Seventh Surge’ so far in images, including the synopsis, and quickly scrollable https://twitter.com/JSto/status/15296... 🔥 And this is something literary/ongoing on background I'm just spinning up today https://twitter.com/JSto/status/15321...

If this post reaches you, thank you for being here for the ups (and downs!) of this SFF creator’s career. I hope you made it through the pandemic unscathed and healthy, and in possession of the truth. I hope you’re happy, wherever you are.

Next up: Astral Fall II.

Lee McCall Hi all,

My book "Sleeping Dogs" is on sale on Amazon.com from now until Tuesday, June 7th, for .99 cents! For any of those that missed out on the giveaway, this is a chance to pick it up at a reduced price.

Premise: Centuries after humans were eradicated from Earth, should their species be given a second chance at existence?

That’s the question being debated among Anarans, the alien race that caused the extinction of humans six centuries earlier. For Prill, a young exo-biologist assigned to Earth, the answer is ‘yes’—a decision that prompts her to join the newly established Human Re-Creation Project. But not all Anarans are so supportive. The project soon divides families, friends, and Anaran society as a whole—with consequences Prill could never have prepared herself for …

Elaine Burnes I have a new novel coming out June 21--Endurance. It is up for pre-orders on Amazon now at https://www.amazon.com/Endurance-Elai...

And for Pride month, I'm posting excerpts daily from the first chapter at my blog: https://elaineburnes.com/blog/

Here's the blurb:
What if you were stranded. On a spaceship. Four light years from Earth. With a hundred tourists. And you are the captain. Then things start to go wrong. Welcome aboard the Endurance. It’ll be the trip of a lifetime.

For five years, Captain Lyn Randall of the Endurance has ferried tourists around the solar system for Omara Tours. Now, as she takes in the rings of Saturn for the last time, she’s looking forward to indulging in simpler pleasures like flying antique airplanes over her childhood home in Montana.

The routine tour becomes anything but when a mysterious phenomenon flings Endurance and two other ships into the Rigil Kentaurus system, four light years from Earth. Stranded, with no way to get back.

Lyn’s first duty is to rescue survivors from the other ships before she faces the most daunting task of her life, much less her career. She has to control her fears and grief to lead an untested crew and panicked guests on a quest for a new home planet or risk a return to their solar system that could kill them all. Unfortunately, Lyn’s past with a clandestine military mission gone wrong doesn’t sit well with some guests and crew members, and they don’t quite trust her.

Diana Squires, rescued from another stranded vessel, grudgingly reveals her identity as the daughter of scientists who researched traversable wormholes. To complicate everything, Lyn develops an affection for Diana, something at odds with her responsibilities as captain and her unhealed grief over her own lost loved ones.

Feelings aside, suspicions aside, her own doubts about her ability to lead aside, Lyn has to fight to protect her passengers, her ship, and her heart.

The Pack: On a distant planet, a young boy finds a mysteriously advanced weapon with a mind of its own. Betrayed by his clan and left to rot, he must learn to survive. But the planet itself is rejecting humanity, and the Pack howls in the distance…

Corporeal Forms: In a post-dystopian future where humanity has rejected the augmentation of the human form, Keri finds herself in possession of the first and only inchoate Artificial Intelligence. But something is hunting her, something from the darkness of the Butcher era…

Enter Final Gamer (Enter Final Gamer, #1) by John Robert Cameron

Enter Final Gamer is a Utopian vision of what humanity could be in a trillion years. It blends high drama, grand science fiction, epic adventuring, and pop culture.

During the great exodus of the Milky Way, as humankind entered the Guidance era, settling other star systems and galaxies, it was deemed prudent to vault all the mainstream pop culture and media from the era of popularist creation. There were more important things to do than watch endless re-runs of I Love Lucy or Quantum Leap.

Prophecy held that should the Universe ever be fully populated and peaceful, the first of Ten Gamers would be born. They arrived exponentially apart in time, each bringing with them the distribution rights to a tenth of the vault. The First through Ninth Gamers were hailed as celebrities who each, in turn, shared their content with a grateful populace.

But, when the Final Gamer entered the scene, Utopia fell deep into chaos and turmoil.

For, although prophecy held that the Final Gamer would bring the best of the best of the best from the era of popularist creation, it also foretold that they would bring an end to ALL the games.

Jose Nessin Hi! I am the author of the book “From Asteroids to Pandemics, living a world of a spontaneous risk”. The self-published book covers wide topics regarding existential risks, and the threat civilization is facing in an anthropogenic world, where geopolitical volatility has become the norm.

After almost 80 years, the world has entered a renewed cycle of wars which could easily unravel into a global one. The dilemma we confront now, is that humankind is actually facing the potential for its self-destruction through nuclear weapons.

Foreseeing the future has become very complicated in these times. Whatever progress humanity has achieved over thousands of years it has evolved, the current geopolitical dilemma may revert back centuries of humankind progress. A new world order is at hand, but not the kind we wish for. Upon us, is the threat of global war promoted by world domination of two autocratic dictatorial, repressive powers, while democracy crumbles. If we consider our world today, movies such as Red Dawn does not seem to be fiction anymore.

Robert Bone Hi folks! I've recently published my first novel, The Condemned, which is Book 1 of my Ages of Eshéa series. It's high fantasy, but definitely bleeds into the sword and sorcery subgenre.

Bauldane has awoken as a living skeleton with a curse that decays the living into dust at the touch of his hands. With no memory of who he was before, and no idea who did this to him, he goes in search of the one responsible. But he finds he may be in the middle of something that could change the course of all Eshéa. With newfound companions, he seeks out an Abandoned - a wizard cut off from the ability to wield magic - who may know something of his predicament.

The Condemned is the first of a trilogy, with other connected, but adjacent stories coming, too. I'm self-published, but I've put a ton of work into this story over several years. If you take a look and happen to pick it up, I'd love to know what you think (yes, even if you didn't like it).

You can find it on Amazon and you can find it through Kindle Unlimited as well. Thanks!

The View from Here, is a science fiction novella based on my short story of the same title. It can be read as a stand-alone, but if you enjoy the story, it is now a trilogy.

The View from Here

Two heads are better than one.

What would you do if you found yourself on or in another world? Do you have the skills and knowledge needed to survive or to make sense of what you see?

Thomas sets out on a hike he has done many times before. Taking only what he needs for the three or four hours he expects to be gone, he passes a vehicle in the parking lot. The handwritten note on the dashboard read: Not Abandoned. The view at the end of the trail was not what he expected—neither were the friendships.

Two adventurous people in an unknown world. Only their physical fitness and combined knowledge will get them through everything they may encounter.

The Second View

“I think I found it.” That was all the text said.

Thomas and April set out once again to explore the world they discovered. There was still another open exit, and they held out hope that they would be able to visit Flick, their new friend. Armed with a plan, they knew where to go but didn’t know what was in store for them this time. Their motto? Expect the unexpected.

Still time to read Book One! (Kindle/KU/Paperback)

The ARC for The Second View will be available Sept 1. Let me know if you are interested.

Alex Arch Hi all!

If anyone wants to read a fast-paced Sci-fi with an inclusive romance, alien invaders, a dual POV with an accelerating rhythm spiraling to an unforeseen twist, I'll share my book and the blurb!

https://www.amazon.com/Stars-Within-A...

Thomas fights to beat cancer. Colette fights to save the human race.

A colonial miner crippled with debt, Thomas must flee his home to cure his recurring cancer. With his health declining at an alarming rate, his options are limited. Spend his last days surrounded by his loved ones or leave them behind for a slim chance to live. The choice is impossible, the prospect grim, and not for him alone.

A pragmatic military hero, Colette enrolls in a mission to thwart an alien invasion. She always gets the job done… unless Mia’s involved. She must then put her feelings aside as always or risk jeopardizing her assignment for the woman she once loved.

Two battles. Two realities. For one to succeed, the other must fail.

Thanks to anyone looking at this, I like you!

Colin Hi,
I have just released Murder Under Another Sun (Leif the Lucky, #2) by Colin Alexander Murder Under Another Sun. This novel is hard sf and a murder mystery. It also has a nasty bit of pharmacology and a dollop of humor. This is the second Leif the Lucky novel and the story picks up directly after the end of Starman's Saga: The Long, Strange Journey of Leif The Lucky

You can find it on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B8L8Z6MQ for the ebook. A paperback is also available. The blurb from Amazon follows:

Nothing is new under another sun. Not even murder.

This mission should be simple. Exoplanetary scout Leif Grettison and ace pilot Yang Yong are off to deliver a load of supplies and reinforcing settlers to a recently colonized planet. It’s as routine as a starflight can be.

Famous last words.

Something is wrong with the colonists. They are astonishingly ill-suited for the task of settling a new world. The planet, too, is a poor place to plant a town for humans. Even if everything goes right, the colony might not survive.

Then one of the colonists is found dead. Murder is a possibility.

Not long after, another one dies—and this time, it’s definitely murder. In a world with only two hundred people, there’s at least one killer.

Meanwhile, the colony’s new leader has a plan—but Leif has doubts. Will this man save the settlement, or use his power to become a dictator?

Leif and Yong’s mission is clear: they must leave the colony in shape to survive.

Leif is a retired soldier, not a detective, and when it comes to investigating a crime, he doesn’t have a clue. Literally. Still, it falls to him to follow the evidence and find the killer. He also needs to deal with the leader and the leader’s plan. If Leif fails, the only mystery may be how long it will take for everyone to die.

J. Colford I have been working on a fantasy romance novel with an unusual twist. The protagonists are Sárán, Elder Prince of the Fae and Mariel Dana, a member of the Wabanaki tribes of Maine and a former Marine with PTSD. This novel embraces a blending of Irish and Wabanaki folklore and culture, as well as addressing current social issues. I have used Google Translate to include Gaelic words and phrases, as well as some Wabenaki words and names I have been able to find (It is difficult to find translations of Algonquin, the language of the Wabanaki tribes, especially as there are multiple nuances of meanings of words and phrases). The title of the novel is Cross Point, after the sacred site on which this story takes place.
This novel will not be uploaded to Kindle until the beginning of 2023, as I will need to submit it to my beta readers first and give them time to read and respond. Be watching for it. I will post an available date when I am ready to upload to Kindle. Here is a quick synopsis:

Sárán is Elder Prince of the Aos Sí, The ruling clan of the Fae, and First General of the Eastern Reaches of An Réimse Naofa, the Sacred Land of the Fae.
Sárán is summoned from the pleasant celebration of the New Spring Moon to the palace in An Solas, and is informed that the Elven sorcerer Daighre, whom Sárán had defeated in battle three mortal Fae lifetimes ago, has escaped imprisonment. Moreover, it is suspected Daighre has acquired the powers of necromancy and is more of a threat to the Fae than when he was defeated and captured. Daighre, consort to Ainfean, queen of the Blackheart Elves, has challenged Sárán to meet them over the Ciardan Sea, or Ainfean will order invasion of An Réimse Naofa. When consulted concerning the challenge, the Prophets decree he must choose his own destiny to prevent death and destruction in An Réimshe Noafa. Sárán chooses to face Daighre.

Mariel Dana is a member of the Wabanaki tribes of Maine and a former Marine who served in Iraq. A car bomb explosion nearly killed her just weeks before her tour was to end and did kill many for whom she cared. Over time she recovered from her physical injuries, but she is left with PTSD that complicates her life. To escape the devastation the condition has brought, she moves to the remote cabin at Cross Point on Douglas Pond in the heart of Maine’s wilderness, a property her grandfather claimed was sacred and which he willed to her.
While paddle boarding with her support dog, a Chesapeake named Jughead, a freak windstorm with thunder strikes, causing Mariel and Jughead to fall into the water and triggering the PTSD. With prompting from Jughead Mariel comes out of the terrified trance that leaves her confused and helpless. Mariel is bewildered as the storm disappears as quickly as it arose. When she moves toward shore, she becomes aware of a body in the water. Her life has suddenly become more complicated by the severely wounded man who fell out of the wind funnel, as the man has wings and is clearly not of her world.

Larry, I found several people to beta read for me by sending out notices on social media. Beta readers are a valuable resource in determining how well the book is written and whether the story is a good read. Some of my betas are really great at spotting errors and hiccups in the timelines or story lines. I send them an electronic copy which they can edit so they can mark corrections or add comments, and when the book is available in print I send them a copy. I hope to find more beta readers who will give honest opinions, which in an invaluable tool in writing well. Good luck.

Leon Stevens Did you know that Amazon will discount books without telling the author?
Yeah. Neither did I. But my paperback is now listed at $3.89. Apparently, I do get the same royalties. Do I believe it? Time will tell.
I don't know how long the sale will last.

Jose Nessin Hi everyone! Want to take the opportunity to invite you to take a look at my third book, “From Asteroids to Pandemics, Living a World of Spontaneous Risks” which was recently published on Amazon.

The book is focused on the impact of existential risks, especially the terminal impact of unexpected risks, which, being unprecedented, leave us naked without contingency plans or strategies to carry on, once these strike following phenomena driven cycles.

Einstein once said that imagination is better than knowledge.

Existential risks put our imagination to the test, in order to solve unexpected situations of threatening cataclysms. In these times, humanity has undoubtedly been left very vulnerable to quite a few. Namely checkmate events, the potential impact of a killer asteroid, the possibility of a nuclear war, and unprecedented fury from Mother Nature.

If you want a peak at my vision of what humanity is about to confront, here is the link to the book on Amazon:

Who knew she would find exploring castles, riding with dragons, walking with giants, and chilling with dwarves so intriguing? Even treading lightly, her presence has repercussions that may unbalance cultures thousands of years old.

Only with the help of new friends on the other side will she be able to avoid catastrophe.
