The Soul and the Seed, the first book in my contemporary fantasy / dystopia series, was published just a few days ago.

The chill factor is partly due to the simple setting, which is a slightly tweaked version of today's reality. My initial readers say the story is terrifying precisely because it feels so immediate and real.

The main character is a teenager but this isn't entirely a teen book. The other major characters are older and the emotional intensity is high. Significant themes include multicultural and international conflict issues, neo-Pagan spirituality and social exclusion.

Here's the story:

Aranka is a moderately normal teenager in a small Oregon town until those who hold true power in today's world decide she's a threat.

The commonly accepted image of the modern world is an illusion. A clandestine force usurps the desires and emotions of individuals, and those who won't conform must be crushed to preserve the appearance of free will. Aranka and a few others stand in the way, not because they are rebels, just because of the fluke in their genes. Those with power will stop at nothing to protect their supremacy. Aranka is kidnapped and forced to watch as her fellow prisoners are killed one by one. It's only a matter of time before it's her turn to die.

A diverse band of outlaws from every corner of the globe fight to rescue those in peril and to preserve their own inner freedom. Kenyen, a young doctor, infiltrates to the heart of the oppression but he can't stop the terror. He just wants to save one life. In the process he uncovers "the Seed," the first flicker of hope in a thousand years.

Helena is a young lawyer from New York; she is a widow with a baby boy. It wasn’t a happy marriage and she feels guilty, lost and scared. She realizes that she has become an insecure mess and she doesn’t know how to find her way back again. Her mother tries to persuade her to return to the family home in Boston, but Helena knows that she will lose herself even more if she does. Instead she decides to go away, to a place as far away as possible, where no one knows her and her story. She books an extended holiday to the island Spetses in Greece, a quiet little island that looks like a mountain in the ocean. A perfect place for her to try to figure out what they are going to do next, how they are going to rebuild their life. On the flight over she promises her little boy that everything will be okay in the end, she just doesn’t know how.

Greg is a spoiled bachelor from a wealthy family, but behind the playboy facade is a man torn between two cultures, two lifestyles. Growing up in England and with Greek parents, he has never found his bearing in life and instead he kept running. Life finally caught up with him when one of his temporary girlfriends gets pregnant. At the age of 40 he has to face the fact that his play time is over, as a single father he has to figure out what kind of life he wants to give his little daughter. Greg needs to think, he needs to decide what he want to do with his life and find out who he really is. Is he British, is he Greek or is he something in-between. His father wants him to take over the company, but for Greg that is a horrible faith. There is only one thing he’s sure of; he doesn’t like the man he has become. Together with his little daughter he goes to the one place he can think of, back to Greece, back to his mother’s island to try to find his roots.
