Deborah Sheldon Hi everyone,

I'm Deborah Sheldon from Melbourne Australia, and I've been a professional writer for 23 years. My short story collection 'All the little things that we lose' (Skive Magazine Press) is scheduled for publication January 15th 2010. It will be available through selected online bookstores (including Amazon) and the publisher's web site.

Some of the stories were previously published in literary magazines. I was fortunate enough to have 10 editors offer blurbs for the back of the book. Here's a link to my web site page that lists all of their wonderful comments: http://bit.ly/34Guue

I'm also a voracious reader of short stories. Raymond Chandler, Raymond Carver, Annie Proulx, FX Toole and Ernest Hemingway are just some of my all-time favourites. I'm looking forward to meeting short story readers and writers through this group. Thanks Vincent!

Regards
Deb

message 8: by Tara (new)

Tara Thanks, Henry. The Flash Field Guide, as we call it for short, is doing really well. It's a great resource for anyone interested in writing short short fiction, or anyone interested in improving their fiction in general. I think all the techniques used in flash can be used in longer works.

U.L. Harper I don't know if I would call myself a short story writer. But I was hoping I could get some feedback on a 522 word story that I posted here on goodreads. It was originally supposed to be a poem but I'm not good at poetry. Seriously, I would love some feedback http://www.goodreads.com/story/show/5...

message 12: by A. Colin (new)

A. Colin Wright “I’m a librarian and I kissed a film star once. I touched her nipples too. At least, I think I did.”
So begins the first story in my 75,000 words collection,A Cupboardful of Shoes.'' Horatio Humphries, on a rough Atlantic crossing, strikes up a brief friendship with star Hélène Martin, while his twin brother Arnold doesn’t believe him—particularly when he claims she visited him the following night. In the second story, “A Pregnant Woman with Parcels at Brock and Bagot,” an unnamed woman may or may not have an affair with a man she met at a party, depending on whether she can get by a woman in front of her.
Other stories are about disappointed love, and about violence and war. Some are satirical, some are frankly experimental with unreliable narrators. They are set in North America and those European countries I know from being fluent in six languages and teaching at Queen’s University in Canada. All have been published in literary journals.

Susan Gottfried Many of you have already met me, but for those of you who haven't (what took so long??), I'm Susan Helene Gottfried. I'm also known as Susan at West of Mars.

It's ironic that my first two published books are story anthologies, as my MFA program-mates begged me to never write another short story again. (They were right, too, by the way.)

However, the readers of my blog demanded and who am I to say no to my readers? There are currently two Demo Tapes anthologies in print: Year 1 and Year 2. They collect the short fiction I posted on my blog, The Meet and Greet, during the first and second year of my blog's life. Year 3 is currently in the works.

Here's the linkie. C'mon by and join the Trevolution!

Al Riske The short stories in my book, Precarious, are about doing the right thing and regretting it. About making bets and dancing naked. They play out in rain-soaked Seattle and drought-stricken California. On a tiny island and in a desert filled with light and heat and sand that slips through your fingers like friendships you once had. In prose that is by turns spare and lyrical, these stories capture the feeling of late summer. A never-ending game of Kick the Can. All sense of time lost among the stars.

Debra Martin I have 2 short stories in the Dark Future Series available. The world has gone mad. All the major cities have been bombed. A few pockets of civilization survive.

"The Right Path": Abraham "Ham" Jones, a cripple, and Zia Slate, a tomboy with an attitude, find themselves unlikely partners in this post-apocalyptic tale of survival. It is decades later since the world blew itself apart. Life is harsh, gangs rule the streets, the system cops keep the peace anyway they can. Being a kid in this world isn't easy, being a cripple is about the worst sentence handed down. Being a girl with no protection is only slightly better. Ham and Zia's lives are irrevocably changed when they meet a mysterious old man bearing gifts - a cane for Ham and a knife for Zia. But, nothing is as it seems. Everyone wants something and no good deed goes unpunished. Forced into a desperate encounter, they must fight for their lives when it's discovered they now have possession of two of the legendary memory weapons, the very weapons that ultimately destroyed the world.

Hello!
Good to see this group here. I really like short stories. They kept my son reading when he was bored with what the 4th grade selections offered at school. I gave him a book of Louis L'Amour short stories; he was hooked!

Some of my favorite collections are by Ron Rash and Margaret Atwood; and I enjoy finding new authors. I see several here I'll give a closer look.

I have attempted the art of short story writing, and have set them in a Kindle book Lost News: Short Stories & Long Poems. I consider my poems poetic fiction, as they are stories--I think I do better with that than with the actual short-story form.

Keep the references coming! Thanks.

message 40: by Haresh (new)

Haresh Daswani Hi,

I am Haresh Daswani, author of the book Evolution of Insanity

An author having a conversation with his fictional character, or losing control of his character, mind numbing points leading one twists and turns spinning the mind of the reader with hallucinogenic colors, concepts, and eurekas.

The short stories begin simplified, and walks together with the author as he takes a personal journey deep within the universe of his own consciousness, dwelling, prodding, dissecting, and creating...

This book is a play on different writing styles uniquely conjured by the writer from random inspiration and experimentation with poetry as prior experience.

This is a chronological anthology spanning the imagination and sanity of the writer. This book is a collection of humour, satire, and philosophy, with the most unique writing style and twists.

This book evolves as one reads, from basic and simple stories of humor, to deeper and more profound satire best savored twice.

Katrina Williams I am an English instructor at a community college and the author of a short story collection Trouble Down South and Other Stories and a novel Liquor House Music.

When not grading papers, I am promoting my short story collection .

Enslavement, murder, abuse, illness: there’s real trouble for the characters in Trouble Down South and Other Stories. The short stories take the reader on a journey to the past through a collection of interestingly crafted pieces of flawed humanness, social injustice, and redemption, and even humor.

The short story collection of historical fiction chronicles events spanning more than 150 years and addresses a wide range of experiences from African-American perspectives. The stories are set in the South amid a changing landscape in which the characters are forced to wrestle with the social issues surrounding Native Americans, slavery, racism, Prohibition, World War I, the Korean War, Civil Rights, the Vietnam War, health, religion, mental illness, and education.
