Inside Information
By Eshkol Nevo
Not really a vacation theme...but it's a 3-stories collection with one about a trip and is quite intriguing because unconventional love stories, diving deep into the the heart of all
I found this listed in July 2024 issue of "Lilith" sounds very light summer reading. I have not read it! I don't read romance novels. What attracted me was "darkly funny" - the reviews reveal you either love it or hate it. Perhaps this has already been listed at one time.I Made It Out of Clay by Beth Kander
Eve is single, turning forty, and—for some reason—has RSVP’d to her sister’s wedding with a plus one. Still without a date and in a moment of extreme desperation, Eve builds herself a golem that, to her surprise, actually comes to life. At first, things are perfect, but when they make the trip to her sister’s wedding, THINGS quickly start to take a turn for the worse. In this dark but hilarious novel, “Eve wrestles with crushing grief, slaying her demons and maybe even finding love along the way.”
Yes, at libraries in all forms so that’s a plus. Reasonably priced on Amazon, thrift, etc. I Made it Out of Clay is nomination #3.

Many get confused with nominating and voting.
We would love you to nominate a book for July. Then when its time for the polls- vote for your choice.
I read “I made it out of clay” last December. It’s a good golem/romance story that takes place at Hanukkah.

Sadie on a Plate by Amanda Elliott was a fun read! I’m new to the group so I don’t know if it has been a monthly pick before.“Sadie is a rising star in the trendy Seattle restaurant scene. Her dream is to create unique, modern, and mouthwatering takes on traditional Jewish recipes. But after a public breakup with her boss, a famous chef, she is sure her career is over—until she lands a coveted spot on the next season of her favorite TV show, Chef Supreme.
On the plane to New York, Sadie has sizzling chemistry with her seatmate, Luke, but tells him that she won’t be able to contact him for the next six weeks. They prolong their time together with a spontaneous, magical dinner before parting ways. Or so she thinks. When she turns up to set the next day, she makes a shocking discovery about who Luke is….
If Sadie wants to save her career by winning Chef Supreme, she’s going to have to ignore the simmering heat between Luke and her. But how long can she do that before the pot boils over?”
Jennifer this is the nomination thread. I’m glad to see your enthusiasm. On Sunday I will set up the poll where you can vote on your book of choice so stay tuned.
I nominate Clarice Lispector’s new short story collection Covert Joy. Clarice is a Ukrainian born Jewish writer whose family immigrated to Brazil. Her books are translated from Spanish and she is an internationally known writer. There is a biography of her written by Benjamin Moser called Why This World. Clarice’s book is available on the Libby app.
Melissa, I’m pretty sure we read that one. Do you want to choose another?Waiting on Melissa, conferring on Kerry. Than we will have seven.
If we read "Last Summer," how about this one. Looks cute. I know nothing about it: "The Goldie Standard: A Novel" by Simi Monheit
I have seen that one on my feed, Melissa and it looks like a fun book. The Goldie Standard is nomination #6. Almost done :)
Melissa wrote: "Did we read “Last Summer at the Golden Hotel” by Elyssa Friedland? If not, I nominate that book."Hi Melissa,
Yes, we read that one. Its a good one. Thank you for commenting.
These have probably all been read by the group, but I've just read 2 and 3 and am reading 1, and they are all incredible!1. The Lost Shtetl
2. Shtetl Days
3. And the Last Trump Shall Sound: A Future History of America
4. Three Miles Down read some years back
Cobwebs and others. We are waiting on Kerry. With her choice we will have a full 7 nominations. Please save yours for next time.
Kerry- about your nomination. Your book is not available in a physical form at libraries and costs $20 on Amazon. That is pricey and not fair to sabbath observant members who rely on physical books then. What Jan and I found is the book The Complete Stories that contains all of the stories contained in this new collection. It is found in a physical copy at most libraries. If you are ok with this, I can count it as your nomination instead.
Next time we're looking for vacation reads:https://jwa.org/programs/bookclub/boo...
Thanks to a member's suggestion
🥰
Those sound good but all new. We can save these for next summer’s vacation reads so we know that they’ll be at the library.
Ok, today is it. We would appreciate 1 last nomination. I am waiting on Kerry and Cobsweb. If someone else responds , then I will take that nomination. Remember we are looking for a lite/vacation read that is available in all forms- audio, kindle, physical copy. Even if we don’t get a nomination, I will post the poll later today.
The poll is up. However due to goodreads settings we won’t be able to vote on it until midnight. Yet another Goodreads setting that I wish they would sort out. Anyway, poll will be up for a week SNF here is the link to vote:https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/3...

A few news and notes. We are looking for 6-7 nominations. We prefer not to take children’s or ya books at this time and have a separate thread where you can post and discuss books in those genres. We also ask that authors and their family and friends do not nominate their own books. Last month was a special case where we did an author month, but here at the Jewish Book Club our policy is no self-promotion. Thank you for understanding. We look forward to seeing what nominations you choose for this relaxing month.
