I started this group, because where I live (eastern US) there are not many bilingual book clubs, nor many opportunities for bilingual discussions. I also want to become more familiar with renowned Latin American authors. Gracias; puedes escribir en inglés o español.

Hi, I'm Judy. Spanish is my second language, and I can read in Spanish fairly well. I read Hija de la Fortuna (Isabel Allende; set in Chile and California) last year and found the language to be fairly straightforward and readable, so can recommend this author for a group read. Also Jorge Luis Borges is fun to read--and short stories are nice to get through one at a time. I now have Sombra del Viento (Carlos Ruiz Zafon; set in Barcelona) in my hands and haven't started it but am looking forward to reading it.

I hope this group grows and thrives! Thank you for starting it.

I'm nearly half way through it now. It's not going very fast but it is an intriguing story and I'm enjoying it! I didn't know there were more in this series.

It's a good suspenseful novel. I read The Shadow of the Wind in English, but now that I know it's a series I'll need to look for the rest in Spanish :)

Hello from Vancouver. Spanish is my second language, and I consider myself fluent, having lived and work in Latin America most of my adult life.

I read about 4-5 fiction books in Spanish each year. I have not been able to get started on this book yet, but read "Litima en Los Andes" by Vargas Llosa earlier this year and enjoyed it very much. It reminded me of the conflicts that were ongoing when I first visited Peru in the early 1990s. There were a few regional and Quechua words from the Andes, so much so that many of my Peruvian friends were not able to help translate.

I find poetry in translation even more difficult at times. Literal translations just don't work- and it is hard to mimic the poetic effects and forms during the translation. There are some great discussions about this on different forums, in numerous articles, and in academic journals.

Hi! I hope this thing is still on and working because it seems like it would be great to share stories that we’ve read.

I love im Australia and whilst I learnt to speak castellano, I never learnt the grammatical/formal education side of the language. So during this little pandemic that’s going on, I decided to change that and started by reading a book of my favourite Latin American author, Isabel Allende. I was introduced to her through City of Beasts in my teens. I never finished the trilogy in English but I am to say that I managed to read Memorias del Águila y del Jaguar. It took me more than a few months to get through it but I did and I, so glad I persevered.

I now need recommendations. I’m current trying to get through Cuentos de Eva Luna but the reading skill is quite the jump from Memorias.

Happy to exchange Peruvian cooking recipes if you treat me well.

Diego: I can recommend to you “La Casa de los Espíritus” since it’s my favourite one forever. I love Isabel Allende as well, and own almost all of her books. Hope you read it and enjoy as well as me.
