Linda How much do you read everyday? 👀

message 4: by April (new)

April Lilly I've been wanting to read this one ever since I watched the movie musical "Oliver!". I can't wait to hear what you think.

message 5: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Wentworth Wilson One of the hard things for classics for me is realizing that the genre was still developing and that readers had much less information at their fingertips. In all honesty, though I read and enjoyed A Tale of Two Cities several times, once was enough for Oliver Twist, though I'm glad I read it and did enjoy it, mostly.

Hannah Wrt the word count comment: Dickens was paid by the word! So obviously that’s why his writing is Like That. You can see how payment affects the writing style of other authors as well (for instance Dumas was paid by the line which is why he has so much snappy dialogue)

He actually wasn't paid by the word, it's a common myth

message 13: by Emma (new)

Emma Oliver Twist has been my most disliked books since I had to read it for school as a kid and I commend you for putting up with it

message 14: by Eric (new)

Eric He wrote many of his novels first for serial magazines, one chapter an issue, as was common then and still is a practice. Whole different approach to reading, getting one chapter a month and waiting forward to the next. Almost like something now… tv serials, even . :)

The line “the way we spend our days is the way we spend our lives” has no right to go as hard as it does, especially in this context. Straight to my quotes collection, thank you Emma
