John Spearman Curious how you have the audiobook. It was deleted from audible over a year ago.

I will edit above review to indicate that the old audiobooks have been taken down.

It turns out both books one and two had been (forgotten) in my backlog for a few years, something like Jan-Feb 2022. I thought I recognised the name on a new story I found advertised a week or so ago, while browsing for kindle books on amazon, called Rawlins Redemption, and there the Pike books were on an old HD. Checking the reviews of Rawlins both on there and on Goodreads persuaded me that giving those two older books a try before Rawlins would be the sound choice.

I must ask. Do you think you have improved as an author over the last 3 years and think this Mercenary Navy series to be an improvement?
Tbh, I find books published in the sci-fi/fantasy genres, nearly universally not meeting standards. I find myself joyous if they aren't ... immersion breaking.

John Spearman Thanks, Monty. I appreciate your thoughtful review and the time you spent listening to the book and writing about your perception of it. I wish you enjoyed it more for the time you put into it.
In all honesty, I can't answer whether I've improved as a writer. That's for readers to decide. I would like to think so, but... I will say that if you compare the ratings of my books, you will see that readers have rated the Pike series lower than my others.
With regard to my lack of knowledge of physics--I'm guilty. In my defense, I could paraphrase Dr. McCoy by saying, "I'm a Latin teacher and an author, not an astrophysicist!" but I know there are some readers who find it grating. Most are willing to overlook my failings in favor of the overall arc of the story and the characters. I'm just trying to tell entertaining stories.
I read your comment regarding the ending. As far as politicians acting arrogantly in their stupidity, I think we can both remember some instances in the last 50 or 60 years where that has happened. What I described is ludicrous, but, sadly, all too believable--at least to me.
Again, thank you for your time and thoughtful critique. I hope you give one of my other books a chance and find it more to your liking (even though you'll need to overlook my weakness in physics). TBH, I started writing because I encountered so much crappy stuff that I thought I could do better. Best wishes--JS
