Murdock Reads I was so irritated by the cheap gotcha ending that I didn’t have brain space to consider the romance. It was lacking. The author has potential but is not at a level to make a plot like this work. If she did we wouldn’t have a gotcha “twist” and the love would have made more sense. It was a way to get the story where she wanted it without having to execute the complex nature of convincing a woman to betray her brother and country. She would have to figure out how to write a badass FMC who is well educated in war strategy and has the balls to give up her heart for her people. We would have seen her push Acker (WTF kind of name is that anyway) more and try to expose him to the truth so she wouldn’t have to lose him. None of it fit together and I am unhappy about it.

you've pretty much summed up my thoughts! the end twist would have worked better if we had dual pov. brynn's perspective didn't create lead up or execute it very well, but rather stunted it. withholding the information and then trying to create this "surprise" element at the end did not work with the way the author framed brynn’s character.

Anna Claire I agree completely with the gotcha twist - looking back it makes no sense like why is she so thrilled he LOVES her why is she sooo upset when he lies to her like none of her actions make me be like oh wow I should have seen this coming!

Janie Porrez I completely agree with you. It’s not even the twist at the end that bothered me but the pacing of the book (oh goodness that long boring ass boat ride) and the bland characters 😴 but the book did have potential. Hopefully the second book will be better.
